Overview: What is This Assignment?
This essay is worth 20% of your grade. Apply what you have learned in class to issues in the news. Choose one of these two descriptions of issues
that have been in the news, and write a 4 page essay on it. Your task: drawing on course material and the description of the issue that I provide, explain
what’s going on to someone who doesn’t know sociology. You do not have to do any additional research about the issue; I do not expect you to know
anything more about it than the information I provide.

Writing: The Mechanics
You will do much better on this assignment if you write a draft—even a partial draft—enough ahead of time that you can give yourself a day or so to step
away from it, then go back and edit it. When writing papers, this helps us clarify our thinking, clarify our writing, and notice typos better than if we write it
all at once.
Writing at a university level is a new task for many of you. We will not grade on grammar or composition skills. However, if writing issues make it difficult
or confusing to read your paper, this will affect your grade. Make sure to use paragraphs and double-check for typos (using spell-checkers to
automatically find and fix mistakes is not enough!).

This is an academic paper for your university class, and the tone of your writing should reflect this. What does academic writing look like? The writing in
these Canvas pages and in the textbook are reasonable examples (though I keep things a little on the informal side). There is one thing that is
appropriate, though some other professors or guide books might say it is not: you can use the first person in your essays, like “I did..” or “I think..” In
fact, you should. Why? Because you’ll be reporting on observations you conducted, and communicating analysis that you have done based on them.
