Describe the participant protections provided by the researchers for participants.
The research study that I used looked at first time and recurrent stroke patients and their perceptions of what the risk of reoccurrence was and behavioral changes. The study used a qualitative analysis that was approved by the Chinese Trial Registry (Lin et al., 2021). Patients were given a questionnaire in an interview format (Lin et al., 2021). These interviews were done in a quiet setting in one of the consultation rooms in the hospital (Lin et al., 2021). Prior to the researchers interviewing the patients, each patient had to sign a written consent (Lin et al., 2021). Participants were also informed of the purpose and significance of the research study (Lin et al., 2021).
How were the participants selected? How might this impact ethical principles within the study?
The criteria for the study included survivors of various types of stroke with communication ability and self-care capability and individuals without cognitive dysfunction (Lin et al., 2021). Since these participants were selected from hospitals, some patients might feel obligated to partake in the study thinking that if they didnt it might impact their care in some way (Gray et al., 2017).
Would the participants in this study be considered “vulnerable”? Why or why not?
Patients who have been hospitalized can be considered as a vulnerable population because not only are they worried about their health but also environmental factors that may interfere with their health. For example, some participants may be in distress still from their health condition and may react in a completely different way (Gray et al., 2017). Since these participants are stroke survivors, I would consider them a vulnerable population because depending what questions were used to determine eligibility it may seem like participants were appropriate when they werent.
Were participants subjected to any physical harm or discomfort or psychological distress as part of the study? What efforts did the researchers make to minimize harm and maximize good?
According to the study, the participants were not in any physical harm. In the report it does state that if some patients exhibited some emotional distress such as sadness, the interview would stop and they would try again at a different time when the participants were in a better mood (Lin et al., 2021). The researchers explained the purpose and reasoning behind the study conducted so that each participant was aware (Lin et al., 2021). They also explained that there would be a recording of the interview (Lin et al., 2021). While conducting the interviews the researchers took patients in quiet consultation rooms in the hospital to promote privacy (Lin et al., 2021).
Does the report discuss steps that were taken to protect the privacy and confidentiality of study participant?
The report doesnt go into detail in how they implemented privacy and confidentiality of the participants.
