After reading the first two meditations:
ASSIGNMENT: Write up a numbered outline of the Second Meditation. Use the numbering bullet system as a way of marking the logical flow of points made in the reading. Consider, as an example, the outline I have provided below for the First Meditation.
Requirements for Assignment Entry 1: When making your outline for the Second Meditation, try modeling it after the outline I have provided below for the First Meditation.
Notice that I have done the following in the outline for the First Meditation:

made numbered notes to track the logical structure of thought in each paragraph of the reading;

summarized the major points of each paragraph in my own words, avoiding directly quoting Descartes when possible;
and,
-
wrote a paragraph-long synopsis of the reading as a whole, which tries to sum up the thread of discussion in the First Meditation in a nutshell, so to speak.
In the context of honest philosophical inquiry, it is worse to pretend to understand something that one really does not than to simply admit a lack of understanding. Being clear about what we really do understand and what we don’t (as well as the line between what we know and what we don’t know) is the appropriate starting point for a search of wisdom. So, if you do not understand a passage/paragraph at all or are doubtful about your interpretation of it, then simply make an honest note to yourself about it in your outline. This will signal that you should come back to this passage later after lecture and/or tutoring/office hours to readdress your take on it.
