Questions:
1. What is the relationship between the myth of Darkest Africa and the concept of ‘Brightest Africa’? Is it possible to construct an idea of ‘Brightest Africa’ without reinforcing the ideas of Darkest Africa? You may find it helpful to think in terms of not only how but also why these concepts were deployed in various media between 1850-1950.
2. Representations of an ‘other’ tell us more about the projector than the projected. Use American (or British) representations of Africa to write a history of America (or Britain).
a. You may narrow this question to specific facets of American or British society, such as the changing types of white masculinity that are ‘proven’ or associated with African landscapes.
3. Many representations of Africa between 1850-1930 were constructed by scientists or for scientific purposes but with a popular audience in mind. Consider how the desire to instruct and/or entertain general audiences shaped scientific images of Africa and how the scientific aims / origins of the work shaped popular ideas about Africa.
4. Analyze the historiography of Western representations of Africa between 1850-1950 (as represented by our course readings). What questions and themes have dominated the scholarly literature on this topic? What methodologies have scholars used? Have some of those methods been more fruitful than others? What gaps, if any, are there in the literature? Where is there a need for further work?
