the whitest, safest suburb in America and plunk them down in a place where their friends are murdered
and they are constantly attacked and threatened. Signal that no one cares, and fail to solve murders.
Limit their options for escape. Then see what happens.” Please answer two interrelated questions.
First, using Donald Black’s article “Crime as Social Control,” what would be likely to happen in the
scenario just described? Second, what are the implications of your analysis for understanding
patterns in crime, specifically why rates of violent crime are high in some areas and low in others?
Make sure that you draw on a variety of supporting readings and course materials, including Black’s
article.
