TERM PAPER ASSIGNMENT FOR PSYCHOLOGY 1215

Follow these general guidelines.

1. You should work in a group of four, and the group should turn in one paper. If you do not prefer to work in a group of four, you may work alone or in smaller groups of two or three students.
2. Your paper should be 5 to 6 pages in length, typed, double-spaced. The page limit for the paper does not include the title page.
3. Your paper should be concise and well organized. You should begin with an introduction that lays out the purpose of your paper, and you should end with a conclusion that summarizes the main points of your paper.
4. Keep a soft copy or photocopy of the paper that you have handed in.

Provide an interpretation of a children’s book based on the concepts contained in a prominent theory of personality. That is, explain what is going on in the children’s book from the perspective of the personality theory. Please choose from the following six options:

1. A Rogerian interpretation of “The Missing Piece Meets the Big O” by Shel Silverstein;
2. A Rogerian interpretation of “The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek” by Jenny Wagner;
3. A Freudian interpretation of “In the Night Kitchen” by Maurice Sendak;
4. A Freudian interpretation of “I’d Really Like to Eat a Child” by Sylviane Donnio
5. A Jungian interpretation of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” by Dr. Seuss; or
6. A Jungian interpretation of “Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest” by Gerald McDermott

Your introduction should provide the main thesis of your paper; what is really going on in the children’s story when it is viewed from the perspective of the personality theory. Following your introduction, you will have approximately 4 pages to apply the personality theory to the interpretation of the children’s book. Make sure to justify your interpretation; what evidence in the children’s story supports your interpretation. Finally, finish your paper with a conclusion that summarizes your main points.

Note that you are expected to provide your own interpretation of the children’s story. Do not consult the literature to find existing interpretations (e.g., Psychoanalytic Responses to Children’s Literature edited by Rollin and West). I am well familiar with the existing interpretations, and any students who have taken their ideas for the interpretation from external sources will lose 50% of their paper grade.

The children’s books are on course reserve at the library. Copies of these books are also available in the Psychology Lab, and some of them are even available on the Brightspace course website.
