In this short essay (2 pages, double spaced), you will complete an analysis of the text that you chose for your two prior Writing Process assignments.

Using your Writing Process assignments as resources, your text analysis should follow the criterea below, relating to Content, Organization, and Format.

Content

Using your Writing Process assignments as resources, your text analysis should include

1) A summary of the main argument (s) of the text.

2) Descriptions of several basic narrative elements of the text (plot, character, description, climax, resolution).

3) Descriptions of the rhetorical situation of the text, including the author’s use of  ethos, logos, kairos and especially pathos.

4) Your own evaluation of the text: does the text successfully persuade an audience to consider a particular viewpoint, issue, or event, through the author’s narrative?

5) Enough detail and specific examples from the text to engage the topic in the depth required by the assignment (1 and 3/4 page minimum and no more than 3 pages – the suggested length for this essay is 2 pages, double spaced).

Organization

You may organize your essay in any way that you choose, but your essay should contain:

1) An introduction in which the text  and author is clearly named and referenced

2) A clear thesis (see question #4)

3) Multiple, cohesive paragraphs with transitions between ideas

4) A concluding paragraph

Format

1) The essay should be double spaced, in Times New Roman or Calibri 12 point font.

2) The essay should be in MLA format, with the student’s name, course, instructor’s name, and date on the left, a centered title, and page numbers on the top right of each page.  See the template in Writing Resources if unfamiliar with MLA format.

3) While some spelling, grammatical or syntax errors may be present, the overall essay should be generally free of errors that compromise the effectiveness (ease of reading) the essay.

4) A Works Cited page with the selected text is preferred but not required. No outside sources, other than the text (and using notes from Process Writing assignments), should be used to complete this assignment.
