The first paper is designed to get you thinking about the issues we’ll be addressing in class and for me to assess your writing.

First, read The Case of the Angry Library Patron in the textbook (pages 27 to 32). Then, write a 1.5 to 2 page letter to Charles Jones, the library patron, based on the example in the text, as though you are Cheryl Miller. Be sure to carefully consider her different and conflicting concerns, and follow the structure of the sample letter.

Your grade will be based on the thoroughness and thoughtfulness of your responsenot on whether you get the “correct” answerand the quality of your writing (e.g. spelling, grammar). No outside research is required, though it might be helpful to do a quick Google search of the book in question to better understand the patron’s concerns so that they may be more fully addressed in your response. Please include at least 2 reasons for your decision regarding In the Night Kitchen.

Please submit your assignment as a Word document. If that is not possible, then submit a PDF. Pages is not very compatible with Canvas, so please do not submit a Pages file.

Note: Please keep in mind our text book was published in 2013. While that was “only” six years ago, language has evolved very quickly, especially regarding the LGBTQ community. Some of the language in the example letter is outdated, especially the use of “homosexual(s)” as a noun and “homosexual lifestyle.” I apologize if this causes offense.

Note 2: Recently, the Washington County (St. George) library director made the news for his decision to not allow any LGBTQ displays in the library (Links to an external site.). Later, the American Library Association weighed in (Links to an external site.). Feel free to read both of these linked articles for a real-life, local example and/or to help you formulate the reasoning for your letter.

Note 3: This paper is worth 3 points, as outlined in the summary of assignments and their point values (page 3). The syllabus incorrectly said it was 5 points on page 4. A corrected syllabus, now dated 8/25 is posted.
