During the early 1600’s, Europeans as a collective group were on their way to becoming the dominant force across the globe. The Age of Exploration and subsequent colonization reignited European rivalries. Monarchs across Europe wanted to secure their right to trade and establish colonies around the world. One of the central notions to establishing the right to sail naval vessels and trade wherever a nation desired was the notion of the "maritime commons" that the sea did not or could not belong to any one nation. Remember, this idea of a "maritime commons" challenged the Treaty of Tordesillas (1494) and the supremacy of Spain and Portugal.


Construct a 200-250 word analytical review of the Freedom of the Seas primary source. What are the main arguments (what sources of knowledge does he pull from)? What are the author’s motivations? Is he convincing? What are the weaknesses of the argument? You should review the link in last week’s Introduction "How to Read a Primary Source" if you have not done so already for tips on analyzing/interrogating sources.

At the end of your initial post, write two discussion questions. A good discussion question asks "how" and "why," probes the topic with seriousness and depth, keeps the discussion going, and cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no." Please come up with questions that require your classmates to engage in thoughtful, in-depth, historically informed reflections rather than simply personal opinions. The following are examples of poor discussion questions: "How important is religion in your own life?" or "What would you have behaved if you had lived during such-and-such time?
