The rights and responsibilities of the nurse flow from the legal standard, the professional standard, the ethical standard and the institutional standard. In other words, there is the law, what the profession believes and expects, what your employer demands, and what your ethical perspective is as a professional. Ideally, they are the same, or at least complementary, but this is rarely so. You will encounter many situations during your practice when ethically you believe you must take a certain course of action, but your employer or the law demands something different. Let me give you a rather usual situation. It is not uncommon to withhold some information from a patient, yet the law requires that all information, unless it is detrimental to their condition, be revealed. If such a directive was given by the patient’s physician, yet the patient asks you for honesty about their case, what would you do?
