Introduction
In the story the guest, Plot is one of the elements that has been used by the writer to bring out the aspect of fiction in the story. There is the sequential following of events as they have been described in the book. The writer has described the events in the book in a particular sequence where the reader of the story ‘The Guest’ is motivated to know the events that happen next in the story. The writer has used one particular style of writing called suspense to bring out the plot clearly in a way that the reader is curious about what is going to happen next. The events in the story also occur ironically not showing the reader what the reader wants to know and this makes the story even more interesting to the reader.
In the plot of the story, the sequence of the events that have been described by the writer of the story affects the other events that happen much later in the story using one principle called the cause-effect. This is where the events being described are directly or indirectly linked to the events that happened earlier in the story and might be the cause of a particular event or might be the effects of an event that happened earlier in the story.
The writer starts by describing the simple life of a schoolmaster and how simple he had wanted to live his life. He describes early suspense in the story by explaining that the schoolmaster was watching two men climbing toward him, of which he could not see clearly. The writer then shifts the attention of the writer to the season that they were living in to be able to explain why the writer could not see the two men. He described that they were climbing through the snow and how the schoolmaster could see the horse stumble in the snow.
He then explains that among the two men, one of the men seemed to know the area and was following a particular trail even though it had got lost in the dirty white snow. Another style of suspense since he makes the reader curious of who might the two people be especially the one who seemed to be following the trail that was lost in the dirty snow a few days before. This captivates the mind of the reader as the reader wants to know the relationship that exists between the schoolmaster and the two people who were approaching from the snow.
The writer takes us out of the story to describe one event happening that led to the schoolmaster not to be able to see the two men as they tackled the rise. He describes how bad the snow was and begins to explain the life of the schoolmaster whose name is revealed as Daru. He explains that Daru was a man who wanted to live like a monk in the schoolhouse, and how he was satisfied with it until the sudden snow without the foretaste of rain (Camus, 88). This event is one that describes the cause of a future event. The event where Daru is not willing to take the Arab to the police station and wanted the prisoner to escape so that he doesn’t hold the burden of taking him to the police station.
Slowly the writer then reveals to us the identity of the two people and their relationship to the schoolmaster. He traces that there existed a friendship between the man on the horse and the school man while the other man who was tied in rope was described as an Arab. This friendship between Daru and the Balducci as he has been described in the story is also the cause of the event that is being described next, how Daru welcomed them to the schoolhouse and prepared them some tea even though he did not know the identity of the Arab.
After this event, the writer then describes to the readers the occupation of the Balducci which explains why he had tied up the Arab when they were coming in. Through this event, we are given the cause of the next event which was Daru taking the Arab to the police station. He had committed the crime of killing, and because something was stirring up in his village, they could not keep him there, so they brought him to Daru to take him to the police station. There is also the explanation why the Balducci was not willing to take the Arab himself because he was needed back and they were not enough men of his type of occupation.
As it has been discussed earlier, Daru is not willing to take the Arab to the police station because of two reasons, he wanted to keep his simple life, and to him, that was an act of betrayal to people of his kind (Camus, 95). Even though the burden was laid on him, his reaction not to take the prisoner to the police station led to the event that happened next. After treating the Arab as a guest even after knowing that the Arab had killed a person, he wanted the Arab to escape to remove this burden from himself. At one point during the night, he heard the Arab creep out of bed and went outside, and he did nothing, not even move since he was pleased that the Arab was escaping only to realize that the Arab had no plan of escaping.
The fact that the Arab did not escape or even attempt to escape gave Daru no choice but to take the Arab to the police station, a journey he was still not willing to make. The events that are being described next are the effects of the reasons why he never wanted to take the Arab to the police station. He starts the journey to take the Arab to the police, but he does not finish it even though the sun, that he had not seen for a long time was beginning to melt the ice. Instead two hours into the journey, he handed the Arab a package with dates, sugar, and bread after ensuring no one could be seen except the horizon. He also gave the Arab a thousand francs and pointed the Arab the direction of the police station, and the time it would take him to get there.
Conclusion
Even though the Arab had wanted Daru to accompany him there, Daru’s mind was already made up, and he went back to the schoolhouse. In this case, the element of the plot had been used to describe the fiction in the story.
