Nurses are different among all healthcare providers due to their broad scope of practice and diverse approaches to providing care. Nursing is unique in its ways of advocating for patients, especially those who are ill or disabled by mental or physical illness. The ability of nurses to cultivate healing relationships with their patients makes nursing stand out against all other healthcare professions. As a nurse, you have the ethical responsibility and the moral obligation to advocate for your patients’ rights in the hospital setting and settings outside the hospital. In an increasingly complex healthcare system, a nurse’s role as a patient advocate has become increasingly important. Personality characteristics are typically more important to prospective nurses, and nursing education should be tailored to improve advocacy (Akn & Kurun, 2020). As part of her role, a nurse advocate aims to assist the patient and family members in obtaining treatment that best suits them and their needs. As nurses are usually in charge of monitoring health information concerning patients, recording patient signs, administering medications and treatments, they need to convey information regarding patient health effectively. As other health professionals, such as specialists and doctors, usually make the final health care decisions, nurses should communicate that information clearly and effectively. As healthcare evolves, it is more important than ever for nurses to advocate for their patients, and personality characteristics should be taught as part of nursing education(Akn & Kurun, 2020).
Defending the needs of patients was an example of how Florence Nightingale improved health care. For example, Nightingale explained the importance of protecting the patient’s interests without considering the patient’s religion (Sanford, 2012). She proposed having nurses gain professional training that would allow them to advocate for the patient’s needs actively; these patient needs continue to exist today. The prevalence of poverty continues to increase in some areas, lack of access to health care remains an issue, and the risk of infectious diseases is seen due to unsanitary living conditions. Even though Nightingale did not use the term advocacy when describing her efforts, she taught nursing students according to her philosophy, which throughout nursing history has eventually come to be interpreted by what we now call patient advocacy (Sanford, 2012).
