CHEM 326 – Organic Chemistry I (Fall 2019)

Research Article Comparative Analysis

50 points

DATE DUE:  Wednesday 12/4

Required Readings for this Assignment

You will use the following three organic chemistry based research articles:

  • “The Endochronic Properties of Resublimated Thiotimoline” by Isaac Asimov, appeared in March 1948 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (provided for you on D2L)
  • “The Micropsychiatric Applications of Thiotimoline” by Isaac Asimov, appeared in December 1953 issue of Astounding Science Fiction (provided for you on D2L)
  • One article of your choice from the Journal of Organic Chemistry
  • Go to: https://northern-primo.hosted.exlibrisgroup.com/primo-explore/jsearch?vid=01SDBOR_NSU&lang=en_US
  • Enter the title: Journal of Organic Chemistry
  • Three results will be displayed
  • Select the “online access” option on any of the results
  • Select the link next to the “Full Text” option
  • Choose any of the articles listed and select the “PDF Full Text” option
  • NOTE: if you are prompted to sign-in, follow the instructions provided on the screen

Isaac Asimov was an American biochemist and science fiction author. The Asimov readings are spoof scientific research articles that focus on Thiotimoline, a fictitious chemical compound conceived by Asimov. His are fake articles about a fake compound that are presented as actual scientific research about an actual scientific compound.

Assignment Details

For this assignment, you will provide a comparative analysis of the three organic chemistry based research articles provided above – two Asimov fake scientific research articles AND one real scientific research article.  Your analysis should include coverage of the following:

  • At least 3 pages discussing Asimov’s Thiotimoline I would like to see details and examinations from both articles. Specifically addressing topics such as: thiotimoline’s structure (I’d like you to propose a proper IUPAC structure (and proper name – best you can) based on the information in the articles); solvation properties; expected melting point, boiling point, hypothesized physical properties (MW?); isolation source – could you find this compound elsewhere?; purification scheme (e.g. what is distillation? Endochronoic vs Exochronic?), optical isomerism, etc…it would also be nice to include some possible future research that you could suggest to Asimov he might be able to try with our modern-day technology and tools (he did not have access to NMR, IR, SEM, MS/MS-ESI, x-ray diffractor, circular dichroism, etc….Asimov crossed disciplines in the second article – what could he possibly do there given today’s modern experimental tools and ideas??  Be sure to cite references, both in text and at the end!
  • At least 3 pages comparing Asimov’s articles and the Journal of Organic Chemistry article you chose. You will look at the similarities and differences between Asimov’s articles and the Journal of Organic Chemistry article, specifically addressing topics such as: how does/did scientific experimentation and analysis differ from the articles written in the 1940-50s from today? How are they the same? (Hint:  there are many for both!)  Identify differences not just in content, but also authorship, conclusions, data presented, etc….would Asimov’s articles get published today?  How about blogging articles?  Relate how scientific research is communicated then and today?  Believable or not?  Scary or reassuring? Quantity?  Quality?  Do not forget to describe your chosen article first, then make yoru compare/contrast arguments – with supporting citations from all three articles and possibly other external sources.  I am looking for some thoughts here…not just lifted sentences or parroted ideas, but your thoughts with substance behind them.  Again, be sure to cite both in text and at the end your references used.

You will turn in your assignment on D2L, but we also present/discuss your findings during in class

**One more thing:  I will use a program called Turnitin®.  This is a SD Board of Regents mandated program that cross checks all documents with the World Wide Web for plagiarism.  I use this program for my grants to make sure I do not accidentally copy without citation.  I love this program and it is very thorough and powerful.  Please cite your sources.  I will refer you our syllabus and the student and university handbook for the penalties for plagiarism.

Technical Details

  • at least 6 pages (following the “Assignment Details” above). Probably will be to address the items I mentioned above.
  • typed and turned in on D2L
  • double-spaced with 12-point font and 1-inch margins on all sides (follow format on the last two pages)
  • use APA or MLA citation format (examples of both are included on the last two pages)
  • a Reference/Works Cited page is required – it does not count in the 4-5 page limit requirement

Grading Criteria

When grading your assignment, I will be looking at:

  • the relevance and thoroughness of your comparative analysis (20 points)
  • the use of examples from all three articles and the relevance of those examples in supporting your comparative analysis (10 points)
  • the citing your sources in your paper and on your References/Works Cited page (5 points)
  • the obvious time and consideration you put in to completing the assignment (5 points)
  • following all of the “technical details” provided above (length, spacing, etc.) (5 points)
  • the thoroughness of your presentation/discussion of your comparative analysis (5 points)

LATE ASSIGNMENT: assignments that are not turned in on D2L by the start of class on the date due will receive a 10-point grade reduction. Assignments more than one week late will not be accepted.

Title of Paper

This is a sample of the format you should follow for this assignment. There are 1-inch margins on all sides. This sample is double-spaced. The text in this sample is in 12-point font. I am not going to be picky about the text style you want to use, so feel free to use Calibri (like this) or Times New Roman or Arial, etc.

If you choose to use APA citation format for the articles, your citations will look like this for the first Asimov article (Asimov, 1948) and like this for the second Asimov article (Asimov, 1953).  For the article from the Journal of Organic Chemistry, you will follow this format (Author’s last name, year of publication).  The article you choose may have more than one author, and if that is the case, you will follow this format (Author’s last name et al., year of publication).

If you choose to use MLA citation format for the articles, your citations will look like this for the first Asimov article (Asimov “Endochronic Properties” 12) and like this for the second Asimov article (Asimov “Micropsychiatric Applications” 12). I put 12 in the citation, but you would replace this with whatever the actual page number is. For the article from the Journal of Organic Chemistry, you will follow this format (Author’s last name and page number).
