“Build or Buy”
A company that is looking to replace a legacy system. The company is evaluating whether it is better to “build” a new replacement or better to “buy” an existing out-of-the-box system. Please research and in paragraph form:
- Give the advantages and disadvantages of each building your own or buying an existing system.
- Give your opinion, after your research, which option do you think is better. (There is no correct answer)

There are many different methods for replacing a legacy system. Legacy systems are systems that a business more than likely started with when the business opened. Legacy systems are great resources until they start to become obsolete and need to be replaced. Some advantages and disadvantages of building your own system are the systems will be known to those who work for the business and there will be no secrets on how it operates day to day processes. A disadvantage of building your own system is that there will be multiple vendors required and if something happens to the system the business will have to scramble around trying to find the vendor who can fix the issue. Some advantages and disadvantages of buying an out-of-the-box system are the systems will be a recommendation from other branches of the business. Businesses look for systems that can work with existing equipment so there won’t be a lot of replacing existing equipment with new equipment to make it compatible. That takes me to the disadvantage of buying a system which is it may be incompatible with the existing equipment. If that becomes the issue then the business will have to spend more money to get equipment that will work with the new system. I think building a system is better than buying one because when a system is built the business will know every program associated with the system. There wont be any call center issues if there is a problem, more so IT will be responsible for taking care of the built system.”

- Project description
The personal project under consideration is constructing a domestic biogas plant that will be used to generate bio-fertilizer and natural gas for energy consumption. The biogas plant will rely on the wastes from the domestic animals, which will be processed using microbes to generate bio-fertilizer and natural gas. The project will be useful in saving the family from the cost it incurs to acquire farming fertilizer and cooking gas.
- Project goals
One of the goals motivating the need to start the project is reducing the domestic cost incurred to buy farming fertilizer and cooking gas. Recycling the animal wastes into bio-fertilizer and natural cooking gas will help reduce the cost. The second goal informing the need to initiate the project is environmental conservation. The plant will reduce carbon emissions from the energy associated with fossil energy sources and minimize the use of chemical fertilizers blamed for eroding the quality of the soil. The third goal behind project initiation is creating an extra source of income sourcing. The gas generated will be filled into containers in the long term and sold to local market users.
