The study of victimology is a relatively new endeavor. Starting in the 1940s, victimologists began studying how victim behavior could contribute to their victimization. The study of victimology evolved over time with the focus of victimology shifting to victims’ rights, how victims were treated in the criminal justice system, and how society responds to and treats victims. In this course, you were introduced to the victims’ rights movement, the theory and history behind this movement, different types of victimization, and how to prevent victimization.
Based on your knowledge and research, in a 20-page paper explore a victimology topic of your choice. You may select from the list of topics below or one of your own interest
- Homicide victimization
- School violence
- Workplace violence
- Sexual assault
- Stalking
- Intimate partner violence (same-sex or heterosexual)
The paper must follow the format below
Section 1: Introduction
- Must provide a full overview of victimology
Section 2: Literature Review
- The Literature Review must cover a minimum of 5 scholarly articles
Section 3: 4-Theories of Victimization
- Discuss the 4-prevailing theories of victimization found in the literature
- Along with the discussion of each theory, provide an example in relation to each theory
- Discuss how the Cycle of Violence and how it may contribute to your topic
Section 4: Body of paper
- Should strictly focus on your topic
- Overview / introduction of your individual topic
- Causes
- Solutions
- Other elements you think is important to include
- Discuss restorative justice and restitution
- Purpose / goals
- Importance to the victim
Section 5: Conclusion
- Two (2) changes that would be beneficial to the study of victimology in the 5-10 years
- A summation of your paper
