Overview

The goal of a discussion is to make an argument and refute (in a respectful way) contrary arguments made by your peers. At no time is it appropriate to make a point that is a personal attack. Your arguments should be a critical perspective based on evidence from readings, lectures or videos presented in the class. There are additional resources available for this discussion to provide you support in making your argument.

Guidelines

How it will work

  1. Your instructor will assign you to position 1 or position 2.
  2. Initial argument: You will develop an argument defending your position in 250-350 words. This should be written persuasively – you are attempting to convince the reader that your position is correct. Support your position with 2 main points that you can draw from the readings, lectures, videos, and other resources available to you in the course module. Include references formatted with APA style at the bottom of your argument (references do not count towards the 350 words). Please make sure your subject topic line of the post states the position you are representing (POSITION 1 or POSITION 2).
  3. Rebuttal:  After each of you has posted, you must craft a rebuttal against the points made by someone of defending the opposite position. Pick someone who has not yet received a rebuttal in the discussion boards to ensure that everyone gets to engage.  As part of your rebuttal, ask the other person a question that is meant to highlight a weakness in their argument. Asking this question is part of your grade (see rubric). This rebuttal should use evidence from the readings, lectures, videos and other sources provided in the module to argue against their position, paying attention to the specific points they make and trying to disprove them using evidence from your resources.  Your rebuttal should be 100-150 words long. Include the word REBUTTAL in the beginning of your response. Include references in APA style from the sources you used as evidence (references do not count towards the 100-150 words).

Important notes:

  • Any written assignment must be in the students voice. Do not plagiarize. The use of lengthy quotes or lists obtained from resources are not acceptable. If you feel you need to use quotes make sure they are brief and include references (include page numbers for direct quotes).
  • Use references to support your argument with evidence from the readings and/or lectures.
  • References should be in APA format.
  • When posting make sure to identify your position (i.e. position 1, position 2).

Due Dates

      • Post you initial argument to support your position by Wednesday, 11:59 pm
      • Post your rebuttal (argument against the other position) by Sunday, 11:59 pm

Discrimination, Health Disparity, and Population Health

According to Health People 2020 (Links to an external site.):  —–https://health.gov/healthypeople

“The impact of discrimination occurs at both structural and individual levels. Structural discrimination refers to macro-level conditions (e.g., residential segregation) that limit opportunities, resources, and well-being of less privileged groups.6 (Links to an external site.) Individual discrimination refers to negative interactions between individuals in their institutional roles (e.g., health care provider and patient) or as public or private individuals (e.g., salesperson and customer) based on individual characteristics (e.g., race, gender, etc.)”

Research-based evidence indicates that discrimination, structural or individual level, has been shown to negatively impact health.

You have been asked to address stigma and discrimination to reduce its effect on health disparities related to HIV/AIDS and STIs. The caveat is that funds are limited and you need to prioritize which level you think is most important as a a starting point. To do so, you  have been asked to present evidence and arguments to support your position.

  • Position 1: Addressing structural stigma and discrimination should be the priority for stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
  • Position 2: Addressing individual stigma and discrimination should be the priority for stemming the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
