Nurses can use information from national health initiatives and tools such as Bright Futures to help ensure consistent, timely care for infants and children, remembering that early referrals are indicative of better health outcomes. Nurses can also make a difference in the health of infants and children by advocating at a local, state, and federal level by lending their professional political voice to initiatives that affect the health of this population.

Older adults make up a significant part of all populations. The goal for older adult health, nationally and globally, is to prevent health deviations from occurring when possible, and to effectively manage existing problems so that older adults can live the best lives possible. It is important to remember to refrain from stereotypically thinking that all older adults have compromised health. Many older adults enjoy good health, happy relationships, and positive changes that older adulthood can bring. For others, it is important to recognize that physical stressors, and financial and psychosocial changes, can have a strong impact on the older adult’s health and perception of self-worth.

Healthy People 2020 and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have national objectives and initiatives that seek to strengthen the health of the nation’s ageing population by using primary prevention (immunizations, nutrition, and clinical preventive services), secondary prevention (screening), and tertiary prevention (long-term services and supports that prolongs optimal health).

Nurses can help patients understand what to expect during the ageing process, and provide important education about maintenance of health during transitions that are experienced in older age. Again, combining methods of primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention provides the strongest avenue to better health.
