Discussion Topic

Over the past two weeks, our readings and discussions have been focused on establishing a baseline for understanding wellness. In this module, we’ll begin our tour through the four lenses, beginning with history. As we dive into the four lenses, keep in mind that each lens is framed as a way of seeing the issue and is not necessarily tied to the associated discipline. So, looking through the historical lens isn’t just about History Channel documentaries—it’s also about how you use the lens to understand the past and present. As you write your initial post, answer the following questions:

  • In what ways does looking through the history lens enhance your understanding of wellness?
  • Consider a current event in the news that has a historical counterpart. How does looking through the history lens influence how you perceive both the current and historical events? Please share a news link to your events.
  • How does analyzing the relationship between history, culture, and wellness have an influence on your discipline of study or chosen profession?

Respond to at least two of your classmates. Compare and contrast your answers to further everyone’s understanding of wellness and the lens of history.

Make sure you support your response with the readings from this module and any additional resources if needed

Looking at wellness through a historical lens helps me understand the different methods and beliefs about maintaining wellness and how it has evolved over time. The way people care for their bodies and discoveries they have made along the way has led us to where we are now. Wellness is now a widespread buzzword and many people are conscious about all dimensions of their self care.

One specific topic that has come up in the news is finance. These messages include but are not limited to: how countries are doing financially post-pandemic, unemployment in the United States, the Great Resignation, rising inflation, etc. There are references to the Great Depression in 1929 and the 2008 Great Recession. “ They are paying more for rent, gasoline, new and used cars and food, among other things. The last time food prices rose as fast was in 2008, when a surge in oil prices briefly drove up U.S. inflation. In the decade that followed grocery prices rose very slowly. The price increases in the past year are especially noticeable at grocery stores since most people shop several times a week. Food is about 14% of the average family’s budget, split between groceries and eating out, government data shows. (Bartash, 2022)” Although 2008’s recession is not a perfect historical template for what is happening now, it feels similar. We can better understand the domino effect that an economic downturn can have on the majority of a country’s residents as well as how it affects the economies of other countries reliant on them.

This event has affected the overall financial wellness of the working class and the disappearing middle class. In 2008, many families depleted their savings, had to cut back on big expenses such as their cars, expensive groceries, skipped going to the doctor, and took whatever jobs they can. I remember being in middle school and a classmate told me his parents had to tap into his sister’s college savings to pay their mortgage. Overall, many people around me were struggling and wished they had been better prepared for financial downturn. Currently, there are many opportunities to work but the future is still unsure. With that, there is a spread of financial knowledge and information at our disposal. We as people have learned from our history of financial downturn and can use this knowledge to prepare ourselves for it so that it does not further affect emotional, mental, or even physical damage.

The lens of history is a very important one for the study of any event across any discipline since it is a change in perspective from the modern here and now. Considering how people thought in times past or how they dealt with certain events not only helps us discern more clearly what to do in our current state of affairs, but how we arrived here in the first place. For wellness in particular, the lens of history is very important, not just to view the development of medicine, but the different ways people have lived and taken care of themselves through the years.

An event that has been very much talked about in the past year or so related to wellness is the obviously the coronavirus  pandemic, which is fairly analogous to the historical Spanish flu. Looking through the lens of this historical event onto our current situation helps to understand what is happening, how serious it is, and different ways to react. One thing that struck me somewhat in my research is the absolute brutality of the disease itself which claimed somewhere around 25 million deaths worldwide in addition to the ravages of WWI as compared to the 5.5 million or so that coronavirus has claimed so far according to the CDC. To think that there was a disease like this one which did that amount of damage barely 100 years ago is very eye opening and somewhat comforting from our perspective.

Since my degree is in accounting, there is no obvious correlation between history, wellness, and my career path, however, on a personal level there is definitely a deep interest in the two fields. Everyone should have a strong grasp of what those who come before them were like and have done, what cultures were like and how they behaved as well as how they took care of themselves and maintained and pursued their overall happiness. To understand these things and the principles behind them and apply them to your own life is to live wisely and
