Task:
A multispecies city is one in which non-human animals flourish alongside humans in ways that are mutually beneficial.
Choose a species of animal that commonly lives in the city in which you live or a city in which you have lived. In this assignment, your task is to present a clear and coherent argument for how this animal species can be incorporated into a multispecies city.
The animal species can be wild (skunks, racoons, coyotes, mice, cardinals, etc.) or domesticated (“pets” and, due to the rise of urban agriculture, you can choose backyard chickens or backyard honeybees). Your animal species must typically spend some time outdoors in public spaces. No aquarium animals or small domesticated animals that do not go outside (ex: hamsters). For this assignment, do not choose captive wild animals who are housed in zoos. If you are in doubt, ask me.
For both assignment options, you should answer the following questions based on the animal you have chosen:

What is your animal species and city?
What are the needs and wants of this animal species? Think about habitat, food, and water sources.
In order to co-exist with this animal in amutually beneficial way, what would have to change about the physical and spatial aspects of the city? Think about wild spaces, parks, backyards, streets, etc.
In order to co-exist with this animal in amutually beneficial way, what cultural attitudes and practices would have to change? Think about lawncare practices, garbage/compost practices, human diets, safety and risk, etc.
In your view is a multispecies city in which we share and co-create space with this animal species possible? Why or why not?

Option 1: Short Research Essay
Write a short essay in which you answer these questions. You should write in an essay format with a brief introduction, proper paragraphs, and a brief conclusion. You need to have a thesis that you state clearly in your introduction and support with a coherent and clear argument throughout your paper.
For example: It is possible for raccoons to flourish in London alongside humans, but to reduce conflict several things need to change about how we organize our city spaces.
