The midterm examination is a take home ‘pre-essay’ exam. Answer the following questions in
two separate ‘pre-essays.’ A sample exam answer is available on CourseDen. Please ensure that

I. What relationship did class conflict have with the emergence of more popular forms of
government (e.g. democracy in Greece, and republicanism in Rome) in the classical period? Did class
conflict also affect the collapse of these government forms?
II. Did the Roman Empire ‘fall’ in a catastrophic event or was it ‘transformed’ in a more gradual
