Emma won a laptop at her high school science fair. The laptop does not have antivirus software installed on it, so Emma must purchase the software. Shell be using the laptop for college applications, schoolwork, and hopefully next year as a college freshman.

In reference to Emmas scenario, we all know that she won a laptop at her school fair, but the laptop does not have an antivirus to help protect it. Here are a few things to consider or recommend to Emma.

Firstly, she should consider performing general maintenance or cleansing of the laptop. She should consider re-installing pretty much everything on the laptop including the operating system for her protection against anything that might be harmful to her in the form of spyware or malware. An operating system that is ideally compatible with the laptop would be reinstalled along with other programs.

The first of two factors Emma should consider before planning on procuring an antivirus is, does the antivirus product or program process an email scanning? Remember, it is advisable for an antivirus to be capable of performing email scans because doing so will help the laptop to scan and filter emails in appropriate folders. Email scanning increases the likelihood of protecting your computer entirely from attacks or malware. With antivirus scanning emails, phishing emails and other harmful emails are normally planted into machines to steal the owners information but when the emails are being scanned, any virus will be detected and will be prevented from causing any harm to the laptop and your personal information will be protected.

The second factor would be to know if the antivirus can detect spyware and malware and provide an alert that there is something harmful being detected.

The last thing would be the cost. Being a student, she must decide which antivirus will fit her budget.

With her using the laptop for college applications, schoolwork, and future college assignments there is already low threat for device infection. Some would say that she does not need antivirus but having software installed that keeps up-to-date with the latest signatures ensures she is protected from potential malware exploits. She should not over think antivirus use but it would be helpful if her laptop use changes while at college. As a high school student about to go to college savings should be one of her top priorities, so cost should be at the top of her list.

The antivirus software purchase can be made at most stores that sell electronics like Best Buy, Walmart, or Radio Shack. Purchasing online at the chosen brands official website is also the quicker and more common approach. Purchasing in person at a store could prevent malware infection from downloading from the wrong site.
