a. SOURCE type (book, article, report, video, etc.):

b. SOURCE title:

c. TITLE OF PUBLICATION that contains the source, if applicable (TITLE of academic journal, periodical, newspaper, website, etc.):

d. PUBLICATION TYPE, if applicable (academic journal, periodical, newspaper, website, etc.):

e. Creator/Publisher (university, corporation, or other entity that created and published/publishes the  book, OR THE PUBLICATION if the source comes from an academic journal, periodical, newspaper, website, etc.). For example, the academic journal Substance Abuse is created by the Association for Medical Education and Research in Substance Abuse, and published by Taylor & Francis Publishing Group. NOTE: It’s always important to be aware of who publishes your source, but it’s most important when your source comes from a less or non-vetted publication or from a clearly biased publication, like self-published books, random websites, private organization magazines or newsletters, etc.

f. Publication date of source:

g. Author background: NOTE: If your source is an academic journal article you DO NOT need to answer this question since you know the author is qualified to write on the subject. If your source is NOT an academic journal article, then you DO need to answer this question. Google the author if necessary.

h. Length of source (pages or paragraphs), and make sure you are looking at the actual article, not the abstract:

i. Database through which you accessed source (Mervyn Sterne Local catalog if book, or specific MSL database if article, i.e., Academic Search Premier, Academic Onefile, etc.). If you found your source through a Google Search, then write Google. (You should PRIMARILY be using UAB’s Mervyn Sterne LIBRARY, NOT JUST Google, to find your sources.)

j. How do you think you might use this source to support your discussion? (To develop what ideas or to support what thesis points or other claims? I want to know if you have the sources you need to support your SPECIFIC THESIS POINTS, and if you have sources that support DIFFERENT points, as supposed to multiple sources that all touch on your topic in a general way or that all cover the same point about it.)

h. Length of source (pages or paragraphs):

i. Database through which you accessed source:

j. How do you think you might use this source to support your discussion? (To develop what ideas or to support what thesis points or other claims?)
1. First, you should primarily be using UAB’s Mervyn Sterne Library local catalog and databases to find your sources, NOT Google. There may be other databases that are just fine, but I would like for you to use MSL since you are a UAB student and because it’s easier for me to access your sources if they come from UAB. I recommend starting with a general search on the MSL home page. Click here to Search Collections (Links to an external site.). (I’m not saying you can’t use Google at all to find sources, just that you should ALSO use the UAB Library, and that you should definitely use the UAB Library to find your academic journal articles.)
2. Your assignment specifies NO WEBSITE SOURCES UNLESS I APPROVE THEM. That doesn’t mean that you can’t use articles available online through the Mervyn Sterne Library website or elsewhere. It just means that you can’t use sources from random websites you find through Google (or another non-UAB search engine) unless I approve them. Note: Random websites are different from legitimate publications that are available online and accessible through Google, such as reputable newspapers and periodicals such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, National Geographic, etc. Reputable organization websites are also fine, but again, you need to contact me for approval before including a website among your sources. (.gov sources are always okay to use)
3. The assignment requires FIVE sources, including one academic journal article. Academic journal articles (also known as scholarly or peer-reviewed journal articles) are publications that have gone through an editorial and peer-review process, and you should find them through the Mervyn Sterne Library databases, NOT GOOGLE. (Most articles contained in the MSL databases are available online and can be accessed from home.)
