It is November, 2013. You work for Cyberdyne Systems, a multinational corporation with over 90,000 employees in 26 countries. Cyberdyne is a top-tier Olympic Sponsor, having paid $105 million to have its name splashed across every Olympic venue in Sochi.
But controversy has arisen because of Russia’s repressive anti-gay policies. A Russian law prohibits any “gay propaganda” in Russia, effectively eliminating important elements of free speech for the country’s gay citizens as well as gay visitors. In Russia, homosexuals are effectively second-class citizens.
Critics say that by sponsoring the Sochi Olympics, Cyberdyne is in effect endorsing Russia’s repressive laws. Some gay-rights groups in Russia say that they welcome the Olympics because of the opportunity it brings to shine an international spotlight on conditions in Russia, which might well result in improvements. But there is also concern that, in its desire to minimize controversy, the Russian government will end up throwing gay activists in jail — or worse — prior to the Games. Will sponsors be accidentally contributing to such abuses? Critics are threatening to boycott Cyberdyne’s products.
This, of course, is not at all what Cyberdyne had hoped for in deciding to sponsor the Games. The Olympics are supposed to be a celebration of athletic achievement and of friendly international competition, and that is what Cyberdyne wants to promote. And of course, the Olympic Games themselves do not directly discriminate. There are many openly gay athletes, and they are welcomed to the Olympics and compete like anyone else.
