• Read attached files first. (Chapter 1 & 2 of this course’s textbook)
  • Choose 2 prompts, 1 for C1 and 1 for C2. Each chapter has 5 prompts.
For C1:

1.Describe how the following sequence of observational discoveries and theoretical developments that led to the development of the Big Bang model (Sections 1-6 and 1-7): History.

Sliphers observations of galaxies with a spectrograph

Einsteins development of the general theory of relativity

Hubble’s observations of speed and distance of galaxies

Lemaitres integration of theory and observation.

2.Describe how the following events and forces led to the steady expansion of the universe (Section 1-8): Natural Science.

Quantum fluctuations, cosmic inflation, gravity, radiation energy, matter energy, dark energy.

3. From the perspective of Georges Lemaitre (a natural scientist), describe the progression of ideas that led to the discovery of the Big Bang model (Sections 1-5 and 1-6): Perspective of a Natural Scientist.

4. Describe how scientists determine the speed and direction of galaxies based on red shift and Cepheid variable stars, as well as the reason for Lemaitre’s erroneous calculation of the age of the universe (Sections 1-3 and 1-5): Science

5. Discuss the likelihood that a natural cause such as a multiverse led to the steady expansion of the universe (Section 1-8 and Section 1E-1 (optional)): Metaphysics.

For C2:

1.Describe the sequence of discoveries that led to the Standard Model of Particle Physics (Sections 2-3 and 2-5): History.

Rutherford’s discovery of the nucleus of the atom in the early 20th century

Bohr, Schrodinger, and Dirac’s characterization of the behavior of electrons in atoms in the first half of the 20th century

Murray Gell-Mann’s discovery of quarks in 1964

The development of theory and observation of Standard Model of Particle Physics in the late 20th century

2.Describe how matter formed in the early universe and in stars (Sections 2-6 and 2-7): Natural Science.

3. Describe the life of Paul Dirac (a natural scientist) and the progression of skills and ideas that led to his development of the Dirac equation (Section 2-3 and online sources describing Dirac’s life): Perspective of a Natural Scientist.

4. Describe the force and matter particles in the Standard Model of Particle Physics (Sections 2-5): Science

5.       Discuss the likelihood that a natural cause such as the multiverse led to the fine tuning of the constants, laws, and synergies of the Standard Model of Particle Physics (Sections 2-5 and 2E (optional)): Metaphysics.

  • Write a 200 words on each of the prompt you chose. One source from textbook and one outside source must be included and cited
