You have been employed as an Analyst in a firm of industry analysts that provide advice to clients on various aspects of technology (such as Gartner or Forrester). You have been asked to write a report for corporate clients on the types of attacks that are made against public web sites deployed by companies and how the code for the web sites should be written to protect against attacks. For each type of attack, you need to: a) Describe, using examples, how an application can be left vulnerable to attack and explain how a malicious user could exploit these vulnerabilities to attack the site. b) Explain, for applications written using PHP, the mechanisms that could be used to protect web applications against such an attack. Please note that you should only consider vulnerabilities that can be introduced into applications by programmers who are not fully aware of the potential for attacks on poorly written applications and now to prevent them. You are not to consider issues to do with web server or network administration. This is the first report for the company that you have been asked to do on your own and your manager will be taking a close look at your report, including the sources you have used to support your observations in your report. Therefore, you are expected to provide accurate citing and referencing in your article. You have been asked to use the Harvard system of referencing to enable the editors to check all facts and statements in your article easily. The size of the report is to be no more than 1500 words. References and a Bibliography section are not included in the word count.
