Application Activity

Two-Point Threshold

Which body part is most sensitive?

Set up:

In this activity, you will be testing your own two-point touch threshold.  Normally this experiment would have a researcher testing your thresholds, but since this is online, you’ll have to test your own.  You must first watch the video on how to make a simple two-point touch threshold measuring device that is in the Media Gallery.  The video will also show you how to run the procedure. You will need some cardboard (or other thin but stiff material), tape, toothpicks (or other pointed objects), and a ruler that measures millimeters.  If you do not have the ruler, there is a link on the Links page to a printable ruler.

Procedure:

You will be using the Method of Limits and Method of Constant Stimuli to ascertain the two-point touch thresholds for three parts of your body: The palm of your hand, inside your forearm, and bottom of your big toe.  Watch the video for a detailed explanation of the procedure for both methods of testing.  You should have 5 rounds of tests for each body area for each method.  These measurements are measures of sensitivities to touch.  The smaller the two-point threshold, the more sensitive the area. Calculate the average threshold of each body area and each method.
