All In A Day
I’ve always wanted to see London. I know, it’s basic. Everyone says that they want to go to London. It’s just one of those places that everyone seems to have on their bucket list. I’ll even admit that I’m guilty of being one of those people. But, I get to be one of the lucky ones who can tick it off my list.
My plane landed earlier this afternoon. To say I was excited would be an understatement. Not only because I was finally in London but because I could get out of the metal death trap I had to use to get here. Even now, I can still feel the anxiety of being 38,000 feet in the air. Although, the second I step out of the airport all of my anxiety is replaced with awe and bewilderment. I’ve always seen movies and pictures of London, but I never believed that I would be able to see it one day. In my eyes, it was incredible.
I took a cab to my hotel so I could leave my bags in my room instead of lugging them around with me while I explored the city. Aimlessly I walked around the city. All around me I could find all of the places every tourist wants to see. The British Museum, Tower of London, the London Eye, and even Big Ben.
“Are you new here?”
The voice broke me out of my thoughts. I was so caught up in taking in everything around me that I didn’t process who was talking to me or what they said. “I’m sorry?”
“I asked if you were new here,” the voice repeated after a soft snicker.
When I looked up I found a pair of bright blue eyes. The man they belonged to was a little over six foot with sandy blonde hair and an accent that I wouldn’t forget for a while. He also had a small smile plastered on his face.
“Uh, yeah I’m new.” I felt like I was stammering over my words a little. “I, um, I just got here. A little over an hour ago.” Again, it felt like I was rambling.
“Well, in that case,” he starts, “would you mind if I took you on a tour of the city?”
“Yeah. Sure. That would be great. Thank you.” The man smiles at the lack of control I have over my mouth. “Do I get to know the name of the man dragging me around London with him?”
“No.” My head snaps up to him to see that there is a smile, again, on his face. “But I’ll tell you after you let me take you to dinner later.” My only reply is a smile matching the one my new tour guide still wears.

This girl is different. I know that she’s not from here from the way her eyes scan over her surroundings like she’s never seen anything like it before. I’ll admit that London is a beautiful city, and after living here my entire life I can still find new things that amaze me. This girl, though, is apparently seeing it all for the first time. But she’s not like the other tourists I see around here. They show up, see all the popular locations, take their pictures, and leave. This girl looks like she wants to absorb everything before it has a chance to vanish.
Before I can think about it I start walking toward her. She’s standing on a street corner staring at Big Ben so intently that she doesn’t notice me walk right up next to her. While she continues staring I take in her appearance. She’s average in height, standing at five and a half feet if I had to guess, golden blonde hair, and green eyes.
“Are you new here?” I try taking her attention away from her sight seeing. Judging from her reaction I scared her a little bit. She looks confused and still hasn’t noticed me standing next to her.
“I’m sorry?”
I contain my laughter before repeating myself. This time the girl looks up at me, connecting her gaze to mine. It gives me a chance to get a better look at her striking green irises before her voice breaks my attention away from them, slightly.
“Uh, yeah I’m new.” She continues talking, but I don’t really pay attention to anything other than the first part of her sentence.
There is something about this girl that makes my curiosity get the better of me. She’s not like other people and I want to figure out what it is about her that intrigues me. I decide that in order to figure her out I need to spend more time with her, and I think I have an idea on how to do that.
“Well, in that case, would you mind if I took you on a tour of the city?”
Immediately, her face lights up. “Yeah. Sure. That would be great. Thank you.” My own smile widens at her response as I move to start leading her around the city. “Do I get to know the name of the man dragging me around London with him?” she asks, catching me off guard.
I want to keep her interested in me while I, as she puts it, drag her around London with me. The only way to do that is to give her something to chase. “No,” I tell her. The only way she’ll know my name is if she lets me take her to dinner.

There was so much to take in. London lived up to it’s cloudy reputation. There was a slight overcast over the entire city, and it really brought out the contrast in colors the rest of the city adorned. The red double decker buses, colorful street lights, the blue of the river, and the stark grey of all the buildings. Every building was, more or less, the same bland color, but I thought it added to the entire grey feeling of the city. Despite how muted a lot of the city looked, it was full of life. People were everywhere. Walking on the sidewalk with a focused intent on making it to their desired destination. Some of the people were really friendly, but there were others who focused only on themselves as they walked past my guide and I.
While we walked, my guide told me everything he could about the city. He talked about the history of popular tourist attractions and about different places we passed, what his favorite places were in the city, and what the nightlife was like, and so much more. It was a lot of information to take in, but I clung to every word like it was the last piece of information I would get.
“Are you hungry?” he finally asked.
“Starving,” I replied. The two of us had been walking for so long that street lights had started flickering on, and my legs felt like they would give out if we walked any longer.
“I know a good place for dinner.” My guide led me to a restaurant near the river Thames.
The inside was dimly lit and casted a warm glow on the wooden tables and chairs spread out across the floor. A bar lined one of the walls with a few people sitting on the stools nursing the drinks in front of them. Everything looked a little used and worn down, but I could only assume that this place was popular with the locals since most of the tables were full and enthusiastic conversation floated in the air. Just like I spent all day doing, I looked around the restaurant, taking in everything while the host led us to our table near the back.

“Did you like your tour?” I was walking the girl back to her hotel from the restaurant. The two of us walked side by side down the sidewalk letting the streetlights and building lights illuminate the path. The sun had already dropped from the sky by the time we finished our meals.
“I did,” she nodded. “It was great being able to see the city without getting lost.” She looked up, meeting my eyes. Her smile lit up her own eyes making the green in them even brighter.
“Well,” I started after she looked away, “if you ever need a guide again you can give me a call. I’d be happy to show you more of the city.” During dinner I made sure to give her my number and she gave me hers.
After spending the day with her I realized that I actually liked her company. At first, I wanted to be around her because I knew there was something different. Now, I want to be around her because I like her presence. It’s been a while since I’ve hung with someone like I did with her, and I realize that I missed it.
Her voice broke me out of my thoughts. “I’d love that. Thank you.”
The rest of the walk was silent for the most part. The girl spent the rest of the walk taking in the city at night. It didn’t take long to make it to the front of her hotel. She turned to face me once we were in front of the entrance.
“Do I finally get to know your name?” she asked.
I did promise I would tell her if we had dinner together. “It’s James.” She repeated my name to herself, like she wanted to get used to the way it felt to speak it. “Do I get to know your name now?” I’ve wanted to find out her name all day.
She opened her mouth to tell me but stopped and closed it again. Instead, she let a smile replace the unspoken words. “I’ll tell you if we see each other again,” she teased.
Without saying anything else she turned around and started walking away. I can only imagine the look of disbelief that must’ve been on my face. She actually walked away after leaving me standing outside of her hotel looking like she just stole all of my candy. To top the whole thing off, she looked back at me when she made it to the doors of the hotel to give me a smirk before turning back around and walking away, again. I couldn’t hold my laugh while I watched her leave me behind.

The look on his face after I walked away was priceless. I almost burst out laughing when I saw his jaw nearly hit the pavement, but I managed to keep it in. His laughter followed me through the lobby, and I knew that I understood my challenge. Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if I saw him standing outside of the hotel tomorrow morning, waiting for me so that he could hold me accountable for my promise. When I walked out of the hotel the next morning there he was.
“I believe you have a promise to keep,” he told me with the biggest smile on his face. He was definitely proud of himself for making it here before I left.
“How long have you been standing here waiting for me?” I tried keeping a straight face but my lips formed themselves into a smile anyway. Before he could respond I started walking away from him. As much as I enjoyed teasing him I wanted to be able to explore the city a little more.
James caught up to me easily with his long strides. “Only for a few minutes.” Liar. “You didn’t ever answer me.” No I didn’t. He moved ahead of me, making me stop before I ran face first into his chest. “Come on,” he whined.
I rolled my eyes to look annoyed, but the corner of my mouth betrayed me. “Emma,” I told him before moving around him to continue down the sidewalk. He followed me while he repeated my name to himself. I remembered doing the same thing when he told me his name last night. We continued walking, but not with any destination in mind.
“Emma,” I stopped walking to face James. “Would you like to explore the city with me?” James’s voice was soft like he was worried I would reject his offer. The confident man who walked up to me yesterday was replaced by someone who let his insecurities slip through his usual confidence.
I realized, “Is this going to be a date?”
“If that’s alright with you,” he said while nervously rubbing the back of his neck. He also wouldn’t meet my eyes while he waited for me to answer.
“James, look at me.” His eyes finally met mine. “I would really like that,” I told him.
All of his insecurities flew away as he grabbed my hand and led me to who knows where. He didn’t let go of me until we stopped in an open space filled with people walking in all directions. In front of us was the London Eye.

Emma’s eyes went wide when she saw where we were. The whole walk here, I was nervous that she would change her mind about spending the day with me. When I asked her on a date it was so I could get to know her better. I liked hanging out with her yesterday, and I was looking forward to doing it again with someone who seemed to enjoy my company too.
Emma was still looking up at the London Eye. I could even admit that it was magnificent. The huge wheel looked like it floated since the middle supports were nearly invisible from a distance. At night there would be bright color changing lights around the whole circle, but since it was early morning we couldn’t see them. It was still a sight to see no matter what time of the day it was.
It was early enough in the day that there wasn’t too much of a line, but if Emma kept standing there then the line would get too long. She didn’t protest when I took her hand and led her to the line for the London Eye. It didn’t take long for the line to filter through, and soon we were in one of the cars slowly making our way to the top. Still, Emma was silently trying to absorb every detail in front of her and we weren’t even at the top.
I never said anything to her because of the way she looked at the shrinking city with so much astonishment. The soft hum from the motors turning the Eye was the only sound other than our breathing. Emma’s gasp eventually broke the silence. Our car stopped at the top and overlooked London.
“This is incredible.” Those were the first words she had spoken since she saw the Eye.
I got up from the bench in the middle of the car to take in the sights with her. “I’ll make sure to bring you again at night, sometime. It’s even better with the city lights on.” Too soon the wheel started moving again, bringing us slowly back down to the ground.

The London Eye was amazing. I’ve only been in the city for a day and I had already seen one of the most incredible things I have ever seen. At the top, you could see everything. You could see how the river Thyme cut the city in half, the morning sun casting pink, yellow, and orange streaks across the morning sky, Big Ben from above, and all the buildings that make up the city.
James promised he would take me at night sometime when the city lights were on. I can only imagine what it would be like to see a million little lights making up a city. Like stars on the ground.
“Where to now?”
I looked up at James. Was he really asking me what to do now? There was nothing that would be able to top what we had just done. He might as well take me back to the hotel because I don’t think I would want to do anything else after that. I had planned on going to the Eye on my own after I got settled in the city more, but I’m glad I was able to go sooner rather than later.
“How about some breakfast,” I finally decided.
Breakfast lasted longer than either of us anticipated. We spent the morning in an outdoor cafe talking, getting to know each other. I found out that he liked art and even draws sometimes. He found out that I came to London to be an interior designer. Back and forth, we told each other little things about ourselves. This went on until we made it back to the entrance of my hotel. Being the gentleman he was, James said he didn’t want to keep me all day when I probably had things to do.
“Goodbye, Emma.”
“Thank you, James,” I said. He responded with a smile that always seemed to bring out one of my own. “I had a great time.”
“So did I. Until next time then?” My smile only grew bigger in response.
1)         2-3 pages double-spaced in Times New Roman, 12-point font. 2 pages minimum, please.
2)         Peer Response papers should reflect close reading of the peer’s story/poem/play, a deeper, more detailed reading than, perhaps, other classmates’. This should be demonstrated in the paper in the following three ways:
1) The paper addresses at least ONE ELEMENT OF FICTION or POETRY in-depth. Begin the paper with this analysis, and write about a paragraph analyzing how that element functions in the story/poem—what works about it and what doesn’t. See the Elements of Fiction and Elements of Poetry pages in this folder. The “Ideas for Peer Responses” will also give you ideas for addressing the elements of fiction/poetry in your paper.
2) The paper addresses 3 THINGS YOU LIKED about the story/poem. These should be larger issues as much as possible; that is, cover the “big stuff”—instead of saying here that you liked a certain word used on page 5, or in line sixteen, if a poem. Instead of saying you like a specific word or a character’s name, discuss why you enjoyed the descriptions of the setting, or the overall way the theme was working in several scenes, the overall message of the poem, etc.
3) The paper addresses 3 SUGGESTIONS FOR REVISION. Again, these should be on the large-scale issues. In general, avoid suggestions about fixing grammar or spelling—that’s the writer’s responsibility to clean the text up for the final draft. Think about what the writer really needs to know from his/her reader, what the writer might not be able to see about the piece for him/herself.
