George Kennan provided an analysis of Soviet intentions and capabilities early in the opening rounds of the Cold War. The National Security Council offered their own take on the looming dangers of the perceived threat of Soviet expansionism. Discuss their respective points of view and given that nearly three years separated their publications, it is clear that events between the two may have shaped policy decisions of the then current administration and future ones. One of the most devastating events in the 20th Century that put the United States in an entirely different light as far as its prestige and status as the leader of the free world was its involvement in the war in Vietnam. In fact, it has been repeatedly stated that this was the first war that the United States had ever lost. Almost immediately following the success of that endeavor, the two allies became deadly enemies that would last for over 45 years and cost both nations dearly with the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990. How was it possible that two nations united in a common cause would turn around in the blink of an eye, and become mortal enemies and along the way coined a new phrase in the English language, Cold War? What exactly was the Cold War and how did it manifest itself throughout the 40s, 50s, 60, 70s, and 80s? Do not provide a laundry list.
