Directions: Your job is to provide an analysis and interpretation of the story chosen, not to just narrate the plot. Make sure that you have a thesis statement at the end of your introduction paragraph. Also, in the introduction, make sure that you provide some background / context for the story and a brief overview of the plot and central characters. Do not write just "for the teacher," but assume that you are writing for a general audience which has not necessarily read the story. Make sure that each of your body paragraphs begins with a proper topic sentence, not just a transitional statement. Finally, it is essential that you support your points in the body paragraphs with quotations from the text. On average you should be using 1-3 brief quotes per body paragraph!

Page minimum: 3 pp double-spaced. You may write more than the minimum, but if you fall below you will be penalized. Use MLA formatting.

John Updike’s story "A & P" depicts a seemingly insignificant event in the life of a young man, Sammy, who is employed at a supermarket. Closely examined, Sammy’s motive for abruptly quitting his job may not be as transparent as it seems. In addition to his obvious physical attraction to the girl he calls "Queenie," Sammy’s desire to make a dramatic "gesture" may be driven as well by other motives, motives that he himself may not be fully aware of. What, in your view, is his deepest motive for quitting? Does Sammy, in the end, believe that his rebellious act has been a futile one? What does he mean when he considers, in the final line, "how hard the world was going to be to [him] hereafter"? What, if anything, has he learned from the experience? Your thesis should focus primarily on what you see as Sammy’s most important motive, but you may also consider more than one motive. Also, do not jump straight to the final part of the story, but work your way through all the essential parts of the story, subordinating your analysis of each of the key parts to your thesis. Avoid excessive plot narration!
