Are you a glass half-empty or a glass half-full kind of person? Depending on your perspective, the same event may be interpreted by you in an entirely different way than someone else. The concept of war, especially on a global scale, is a terrifying thought. The reality of World War II is a tough one – the deadliest conflict the world has ever seen. The Cold War that followed was marked by significant cultural and political upheaval around the world. So yes, this was a dark period in human history. On the other hand, significant achievements and gains were won right alongside battles on the front lines.

General aviation, commercial aviation, aviation oversight and regulation, true pilot certification, colossal aviation infrastructure development, and so much more see huge gains during this period. The simple fact is that many technologies and opportunities we enjoy in aviation today would not have been possible without the threat and reality of war. The “Aviation Revolution” wasn’t just about fighter planes and bombers. It was about better engines, communication and navigation technology, and discovering a way to make aviation a profitable business, not just a hobby for the rich and a necessity for the military. Or maybe that’s just a glass half-full kind of opinion.

For this week’s discussion, I want you to comment on the points below. Remember to author an original post and then comment on the posts of at least two fellow students (WHICH I WILL SEND AFTER ASSIGNMENT IS FINISHED!). Let’s have a good, productive discussion!

List three technologies to come out of the World War II era, and discuss their importance during the war and to aviation today.

List three technologies to come out of the post-war era, and discuss their importance during the Cold War period and to aviation today.

What affect did role-purposed aircraft have on the outcome of World War II and the major conflicts to follow during and after the Cold War period? Why was this shift in tactics necessary? Where did this concept originate?

What comparisons can be drawn between the aerospace research and development efforts that followed World War II and the days of the early pioneers like Cayley, Lilienthal, the Wrights, and others?

What factors spurred the rapid growth of the general and commercial aviation sectors during this period of history?
In your opinion, what was the single greatest aviation-related outcome of both the World War II and post-war periods? Why?

I will send you the files which you will base your answers off of, as well as the rubric. I will send you a PDF of the textbook, you are to ONLY use Chapter 4 and Chapter 5 of the PDF!
