1. The bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki by the US brought an end to WWII. Japans surrender in response to the bombings made the planned 2-phase invasion of Japan unnecessary. It is estimated that the invasion would have cost the allies 1 million lives and Japanese casualties would have been in the millions. The bomb sites were chosen with the specific aim of obtaining the greatest possible psychological effect against Japan and its initial use being sufficiently impressive that the importance of the weapon would be internationally recognized. With this end in mind, they chose targets that had not been previously bombed and were in the middle of a larger industrial area. Civilian casualties were intended. On initial impact, 90,000-166,000 people were killed in Hiroshima and 60,000-80,000 people were killed in Nagasaki. More casualties followed. Was the bombing the right thing to do?
