David- I find it facinating how many outlooks shaped the path that current day criminal justice works. Not only that but that these ideas sometimes come back around but with a different name and possibly even minor changes. The many people such as Beccaria, Bentham, Lombroso, and Ferri that we learned about in this chapter had different outlooks even though some overlaped in some ways. Through time discoveries have been made to credit or discredit some of the belifes from these individuals. I personally believe that our current criminal justice pulls from multiple of these outlooks.
Which of these four men do you believe had the greatest impact on the modern criminal justice system?
Gabriel-There are four theories when it comes to Theoretical Penology, Deterrent, Retributive, Preventive, and Reformative. Some of these theories focus of the prisoners and the punishments and rehabilitations. A couple questions come up as well, like could they enter back into the world and stay clean? Can someone of bad nature change? Should their punishment line up with the committed crime?
Should the taking of someone’s life result in the death penalty?
These questions and theories help decide what punishment should be given.
Taylor The Medical Model was a great idea to incorporate medicine in correctional treatment. Rehabilitation and treatment intentions were with the help of psychiatrists, psychologists, in attempt to transform a offender into a law-abiding citizen. The Medical Model can then use this information to focus more in depth on the psychological cause of crime.
