Recall from the Tyler lecture that The Contrast functioned to provide social commentary (a “moral” to the story) in order to legitimize its place on the stage. The most obvious commentary given the time period is that of American pride and patriotism. Write an analysis that identifies and explains three aspects of patriotism (British vs. American ideas but also the construction of who this “new” America was) conveyed in the play. Extend the thinking to also explain how each of the three is apparent in today’s concepts of patriotism.
