Discussion Questions are based on reading and material covered in class. This gives the student opportunity to assimilate, process, and apply critical thinking skills in a timely manner, as well allow individual guidance from the instructor.
(1) James argues that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone (James 2:24) which seems to contradict what Paul writes concerning justification by faith and not by works (Romans 4). Both apostles use Abraham as support for their instruction. Explain the differences and congruency between James theological instruction and Paul’s. [Helpful sources: class discussion, Jobes (ch. 5), and Moo (pp. 37-43 and 118-144.]
(2) List and briefly describe 5 or 6 implicit references and allusions to Jesus Christ in the letter of James that inform the Christology of James [Helpful source: Jobes, ch. 6].
The initial post is due on Wednesday evening of this unit (150-200 words for answer to Question 1, and 150-200 words for answer to Question 2). Responses are due to two other students’ posts by Friday evening (100 words minimum each). Make sure to use and cite at least two scholarly sources (such as your textbook and commentary) in your initial post, and include some type of “specific” and relevant support in each of your replies to advance the discussion (and cite).
