- Summarize each of attached articles that treat Newton’s religious and non-scientific thought, and his work at the Mint.  Based on the material in these articles, evaluate to what extent the commonly understood “Newtonian Worldview,” as portrayed in the textbook, corresponds to Newton’s actual “Worldview.”

- Which of Newton’s assumptions, concepts and conclusions have been adopted and developed as part of the “Newtonian Worldview,” again, as this term is commonly used?

- Which of Newton’s concepts and methods have been overlooked, discarded, neglected or refuted in the “Newtonian Worldview?”

- Please explain why Newton was interested in theological matters and whether there are common themes and methods in Newton’s scientific thought and religious thought.

Note that one reason is that much of Newton’s non-scientific work was kept private during his lifetime and was only gradually made public. Further, much of his private writing was idiosyncratic, mystical and religious. As religious conformity was legally imposed in his time, and, punishment of religious non-conformists included brutal torture and execution by governments, it is understandable that Newton did not publish his religious thinking during his own lifetime. As the “Newtonian Worldview” became more prevalent legal sanctions related to theological matters were relaxed. Were these political and cultural factors the only reasons that much of Newton’s thinking was discarded or neglected or were Newton’s theological inclinations discarded over time as mathematics was developed to enable the achievement of more complete solutions of Newton’s equations in astrophysics and other fields?

- Under the assumption that there was a “Newtonian revolution,” over what time period did it occur? What were the key events that composed this revolution? What were the key ideas? Who were the individuals that played key roles in this process and what were their contributions? What specific insights or methods of investigation did these particular individuals employ that clearly distinguished their thought from pre-Newtonian thought?
