1. Chapter 1 (11-Pages)
2. Chapter 3 (12-Pages)
3. Chapters 1 and 3 need to fit around chapter 2 (attached).
4. Use Outline that is attached and copied below for headers and guidance.
5. Use model dissertation for section competition. The model is on Students with disabilities. This dissertation is on discipline.
6. Use articles from chapter 2 and add articles as needed. I just said 35 but many not need to add in that many additional. Work to add in recent articles/research experts (i.e.- Kathy Bradshaw…)

OUTLINE INFORMATION FOR CHAPTERS 1 AND 3

CHAPTER ONE: CONTEXT OF THE STUDY
A. Introduction/Context
A brief introduction of what you want to study.
B. Overview of the Study
Introduce the reader to how you plan to go about the study.
C. Historical Perspective
Give the reader some background about your topic.
D. Statement of the Problem
What is the problem and why it is worthy of your study?
E. Significance of the Study
a. National Perspective (USA)
b. State Perspective (Virginia)
c. Local Perspective (Southeastern Virginia)
Tell the national, state and local issues related to your topic.
F. Purpose of the Study
What do you hope to accomplish through this study. What will be product be?
G. Justification of the Study
Why is the study important?
H. Research Questions
The research questions that direct the researcher in examining the disproportionality of discipline in an Urban school division within the Commonwealth of Virginia were:
1. Are student referrals disproportionate by ethnicity, gender and SWD? (Compare the percentage of students with referrals to the division membership)
2. Are dispositions of student referrals that result in out of school suspension disproportionate by ethnicity, gender and SWD? (Compare the percentage of students with referrals to the division membership)
3. Are there significant differences in out of school suspension lengths by ethnicity, gender and SWD? (Analysis of Covariance (ANOVA): Analyzing the mean suspension length by subgroup (ethnicity, gender, SWD)
J. Conceptual Framework
Develop your own conceptual model.
K. Definition of Terms
Define any terms that are not common knowledge or define how common terms will be used in your study. (try to use definitions that you can cite – for credibility)
L. Limitations/Delimitations
Explain the limitations of your study (Things for which you have no control) and the delimitations of your study. (Things that you or other people choose to control)
-One limitation is reporting data. (Ex: Inconsistency in assignment of dispositions.)
M. Organization of the Study
Outline what you hope to accomplish in each chapter.

CHAPTER THREE: METHODOLOGY
A. Introduction and Purpose
B. Research Questions
a. These should have been stated in Chapter One. This will refresh the reader’s memory.
C. Research Design
a. Will your study be quantitative/qualitative or mixed methodology? A quantitative methodology was used to answer the research questions.
b. Explain the strengths of this methodological approach.
D. Data Sources
Data was compiled from the Student Information System. The top 5 discipline infractions over three consecutive school years starting in 2016-2017. The Fall Membership report, available through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) website, provided student enrollment numbers as of October 1 of each school year.
E. Reliability and Validity
Data is sourced from a school division.
F. Permission to Conduct Study and Use Data
IRB and Approval from the School division…
No personally identifying information about students was obtained, nor was any information collected directly from students…
G. Data Gathering Procedures
The fall membership data for the school division was obtained from the VDOE website…
The discipline data was obtained from the Research and Evaluation department of the school division in question…
How will you go about doing the items above?
H. Data Management
How will you record data and store THEM?
Data combined into a single data source (fall membership and discipline infractions)…
No personally identifiable information will be gathered by the researcher…
I. Data Analysis
Will you use a computer-based management system? Will you do ANOVA’s, regression, etc.
Excel was used to determine both the disproportionality risk ratios and conduct the analysis of variance.
*See p. 31 for equation and reword.
a1=Count of Students in a specific racial, gender or disability group and received a disciplinary infraction (From discipline data)
a2=Count of all students in a specific racial, gender or disability group (Fall membership)
b1= Count of Students not in a specific racial, gender or disability group and received a disciplinary infraction (From discipline data)
b2= Count of all students not in a specific racial, gender or disability group (Fall membership)

J. Methodology Summary
Summarize the methodology to be utilized in your study
Reword page 32 of model dissertation to specific to discipline data study.
