As we begin our exploration of film and theater, one thing that is perhaps obvious is that live theater can vary greatly, theoretically, from performance to performance. However, over the past decade, we see shows on Broadway today where every performance has to be “exactly” like the one before it. This is achieved through prerecorded music mixed with smaller performing ensembles. And, often there can be a drop off in ticket sales when a “headlining” star leaves the show. Even the shows themselves are not original, but are instead based on popular films.
Discuss what impact our appetite for “the familiar” may impact live theater. What elements have the greatest chance of maintaining the “status quo” for a live performance?
