The authors of our text write on page 37:

Yet religion teaches us what God’s will is and how to accomplish it, and not what is right and how to do it.

It is possible that the dictates of religion may conflict with morality, or that the dictates of morality may disagree with religion.

I’m sure these claims would be disputed by many—perhaps by people you know and work with. In the lecture for this week I mentioned one goal of a philosophical study is to clarify relations between different concepts. These sentences from the text express one view about the relation be tween the concept of morality and the concept of religion. Another goal of a philosophical study that I mentioned is to evaluate concepts, or frameworks of concepts, for their correctness or adequacy.

I’d like you to try your mind at a bit of this kind of study. Try thinking—and please share your thinking with the rest of us—about the correctness or adequacy of what the text says about the relation between morality and religion. Your conclusion will interest me, but not as much as the reasons you offer to support it. Perhaps the following case will stimulate your thinking.

A few years ago, around the Jewish New Year, leaders of a Christian denomination encouraged their followers to make the Jewish holiday a special opportunity to attempt to convert Jews to Christianity. (I don’t remember the name of the Christian demomination. I’m not Jewish, and I don’t know the religious significance of the Jewish New Year holiday. But I imagine this would be like Jews being encouraged to try converting Christians around Christmas or Easter.) When word of this Christian program reached Jewish leaders there was a public outcry.

Do you think that we have here a case of leaders in one religion professing their faith in a way that is unfair or disrespectful to another religion? If so, then does this suggest that there are morally right and wrong ways for religious professionals to promote their faith? And is this then a case of the dictates of morality conflicting with the dictates of religion?
