You should choose one health issue of global importance; this could be a global threat such as Ebola, malaria or HIV;
aspects of non-communicable disease;
demographic influences such as ageing or gender issues;
a social issue such as migration and displaced people etc.
and appraise the impact of this on the health status of a population group.
You should identify and appraise related global health initiatives or policies derived from the WHO, charitable or governmental sources and evaluate the impact or likely impact on a healthcare system/s.
This essay will require you to access and utilise relevant data and information on global health issues, the health status of populations and relevant policy documents.
The learning outcomes that you will demonstrate are:
a) Understand and appraise current perspectives on global health and recognize the inter-connectiveness of global factors impacting on the health status of populations.
b) Explain the role of the World Health Organisation and/or other global health agencies and critically evaluate their role in influencing the character and development of health care systems.
c) Critically examine the relationship between specific characteristics of healthcare systems and health status outcomes for populations.
d) Recognise and critically evaluate the factors influential in the morbidity and mortality profile of a country and analyse the impact of these on the health status of the population and the healthcare response.
e) Appraise the contribution of demographic and socio-cultural influences on the structure and organisation of healthcare systems.
f) Appreciate the impact of globalisation on the health of populations.
g) Apply critical evaluation skills to available information and data in order to ground the analysis of health care system within its broader political, cultural and social policy frameworks.
