Paper I (short fiction) – Instructions for Rewrites

You will have received a grade on your first paper (Paper I, Short Fiction). This grade is provisional, depending upon whether or not you choose to submit a rewrite.

You normally have a week to submit a rewrite. However, I will consider making exceptions on a case by case basis. Let me know in advance if you have reason to believe you will need more time.
You must turn in your rewrite (email it to me as an attachment) no later than a week from when you receive the grade. This will be on Monday, Oct. 19 (ENGL 102b) or Tuesday, Oct. 20 (ENGL 102d).
The rewrite must follow the instructions provided on the original assignment handout (see Blackboard).
The grade on the rewrite will not be accompanied by any additional comments. The grade on the rewrite will thus be final.
The grade on the rewrite will be averaged with the grade on your first draft. The resulting mark is your final grade.
If you want to learn more about the grading process, you will need to make an appointment to consult with me in an office hour.
Once your rewrite receives a grade, the provisional grade on your first draft will be expunged and replaced with the new grade.
Chances are, your rewrite will be an improvement over your original draft. However, if your second draft is not an improvement or is actually worse than the first one, you will keep the original grade. No further penalty will be imposed.
You have nothing to lose by attempting a rewrite. However, the choice is yours.

Empathy on ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’
 
Harper Lee, in his well-known novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” entirely depicts on the significant theme of empathy to show the readers advantages of understanding human nature through the use of Scout and Boo, Jem and His Father, Mrs. Dubose’s lessons and the black community, and finally, Tom and Mayella.
            Based on Atticus Finch Compassion, Harper Lee shows how the lawyer is driven by both his duty and nature as a simple humanism. Although his commitment only allows him to blind in injustice, his nature of humanism is very significant since it is the source of protection to the black man in court. In this case, the author tries to depict how a person’s nature is beyond his or her obligation duties. The lawyer fully supports the side of the law, saying, ‘Until the guilt of the defendant is proved, he or she is considered innocent.’ Such stand as per the law is why Finch fully agreed to represent Tom against rape accusation. His willingness to be on the side of Tom made him never to lose hope in his stand despite the associated possible risks concerning his reputation. Therefore, Atticus addresses him beyond being an equal person by identifying his own life and destiny as he condemns the prejudice against racism and inequality. The feelings of Atticus can be noted to be empathetic towards others as he put himself on the same shoe.
Based on the case presented, Atticus Finch shows how moral behavior is based on empathy. He is very kind to the client, Tom Robinson, and thereby fully protected him against mob justice and stood on his side. Therefore, he shows great compassion to make everyone understand their wrongdoings, thereby influencing good human behavior.
Based on the case of Scout and Boo. Scout’s sympathy can be seen as she fully expressed her kindness and human nature to the neighbor, Boo Radley. Such empathy has resulted due to the inaccessibility of a typical injustice environment. According to her, her neighbor is only a very delicate mockingbird; thereby, she has been condemned by people who fail to understand his behavior. Besides, this is a perceiving threat even to the children since, in reality, we can notify a child aiming to communicate, but deprivation takes full control. The acceptance of the gift by the girl is to brighten the limitless nature. Generally, tracing Scout’s personality transformation is possible since it shifts from frank sarcasm to ultimately acknowledging and understanding another person. It was majorly to show empathy to others and to change how people viewed him.
Based on Jem and his father, the author shows the existing complex relationship between Jem and Atticus. The blame results due to Jem’s father’s nature, characterized by his extreme straightforwardness and the severity of the highest level. Despite such human nature, during court trials, Jem shared his dad’s pain, which resulted due to predetermined sentences and a sense of despair. Therefore, he fully sympathized with the misfortune of Tom, though he became proud based on the principled position of the father, who operated in an unshakable attitude. Based on Jem’s nature, he does not only sympathize with people but also considers other living beings. Such sympathy to other beings can be seen when Scout was almost killing the insect (the roly-poly). Jem said, ‘Don’t kill that, Scout. Set him out on the back steps.’ It means that Jem understands how harmless such creatures are and, therefore, does not deserve to be killed. This clearly indicate how deep his acknowledgment and understanding based on empathy have expanded.
Based on Mrs. Dubose’s lessons and the black community, the novel expresses Modi as a very active black community defender. She poses any form of racial insults and humiliations. It is because of her nature that she fully supports Finch. After acknowledging Tom’s guiltiness, she noted the excellent work of Atticus, which forced the court system to devote much strength and time to such a case as compared to the original plan. Through influence, the widow failed to fear engaging herself in injustice.
Understanding Mrs. Dubose’s health state makes Atticus send the kid to her, which Jem resisted. But he began to understand and acknowledge her condition with time and brightened his mission because of empathy. According to Scout, Mrs. Dubose become on power over her as she forced her to read for her. Despite such negativity towards Mrs. Dubose, Scout still empathized with her by showing empathy to her, mostly when she was sick. Scout could understand how much pain Mrs. Dubose could have been undergoing during the illness period. This can be felt in her statement; I felt sorry for her.
Besides, Tom and Mayella have been used to show the required daily empathy in our lives. The gesture made by Tom raised the alarm in the entire courtroom since it was believed that by being a black resident with the white society, he had no reason to feel sorry for the white woman Mayella. Although he does not know much concerning the white woman, in his heart, he feels that the woman should be assisted, “Looked like she didn’t have nobody to help her… yes . I felt right sorry for her.” (Lee 217) Specifically, Robinson’s action to willingly and fully assist Mayella Ewell to perform the daily household chores is a subsequent trial. It results in a paradox question since the prosecutor does not know to acknowledge, nor does he believe in humanity. He, therefore, attributes his human nature to the highly intelligent white people only. In the case related to the blacks, Mr. Gilmer does nothing apart from living the basest motives. Failure to understand his empathy and acknowledge could have been the case for the death sentence of Tom Robinson.
It can be concluded that the ending of the novel, “To Kill a Mockingbird,” does not leave the reader in an indifferent state since it is a tragedy to acknowledge and teach about empathy. Therefore, Harper Lee perfectly illustrates to ‘walk about in someone’s skin’ by using central protagonists such as Scout, Jem, and Tom to make them learn empathy lessons along with the readers. As the characters’ understanding based on empathy grows, our knowledge as readers grow. Therefore, Harper Lee proves that it will never be too late to understand and learn concerning sympathize., One only needs to open his or her eyes wide while illuminating selfishness.
