1.1 In his essay "You Are Not an Algorithm," Justin E.H. Smith argues that people’s "acquiescence" to algorithms "does not however change our nature, but only perverts it." What does Smith mean by this statement and what are the implications of this view?

  • Summary states the main point (thesis) and key supporting points of the source essay in your own words. A summary is much shorter than the original text. Therefore, you must decide which of the author’s ideas to include and which to omit.
  • Analysis is the act of separating something into the elements that constitute it. Your analysis of the text should help you find evidence that will support your response to the question posed in the essay prompt. For the purpose of this essay, analysis should focus on the content of the source essay.

According to “Understand the Difference Between Responding and Analyzing," from Libretexts, “Analysis means explaining how the parts of text [an essay] work together to create the meaning.” To accomplish this task, read “through the writer’s eyes to understand the deeper, interwoven meanings layered with a text. You should assume that ALL choices in a text are deliberate writerly choices, even if they don’t make sense to you right away."
