FINAL INDEPENDENT PROJECT – PHOTO-BASED WORK OF ART

The final photographic project serves as your final exam for the course. You will create a small body of work by visualizing and producing 8 photographs on a single theme or subject matter. Students can use digital cameras, film cameras, camera phones, polaroids, etc. You will also write an artist statement describing the concept of the work. Old images are not allowed. All images submitted for the final project must be taken specifically for the project so that you can utilize the new knowledge you gained throughout the semester to inform your view and create a solid group of images unique to you.
Your work can be in the form of any genre or style – landscapes, architecture, objects, people, street photography, fine art, conceptual, documentary, photojournalism, surreal, etc. The more work you look at, the better your ideas will become. I recommend thinking about what subject youd like to explore throughout the semester as we visit various artists, photographers, and their distinct approaches to the medium. We will discuss further and more in depth throughout the semester as we cross varied intersections that apply to conceptualizing your view and approach.
I want to take the time to invoke your think tank process for your final project as it is in place of your final exam. Thus, it should be treated with as much fervor as a solid study. You’ll find below the assignment description for your Final Independent Project to refresh your memory. One thing to keep in mind is simply that all images submitted for the final should be taken specifically for the final. NO OLD IMAGES accepted! It refutes the entire point of applying your new knowledge to the photographic process. If you’re shooting on your cellphone, no need to worry about the sizes as the files will be small enough to upload. If you’re working with a digital camera, that is where you’ll want to ensure the image is no more than 1200 pixels in the longest direction. Otherwise, you’ll run into issues uploading your images as they’re too large. The best format for you to hand in your images is in a PDF file. This is how your PDF upload should look:
First Page: Artist Statement
Following pages: One image per page (8 in total)
Last Page: Reflection : Simply write a paragraph reflecting on how you feel about your images and what the photographic process was like for you.

*Being that this is in place of your final, the expectation is that you spend a considerable amount of time working on your project. It is always overtly obvious when a student has merely driven around in their car for an hour to capture sunsets or gone to the beach to spend an hour photographing. That’s not what I’m looking for. This is the sort of project you invest your time and energy into really conceptualizing and looking at as much photographic work that relates to your theme as possible. This allows you to see what has been done and gives you something to create a visual dialogue with.
Items to be submitted:
1. Artist Statement – Statement that describes the work
2. 8 images – present each  on their own page
3. Self-Assessment – This allows you to reflect on the work
