Hot Topics in Bioethics: Midterm & Term Paper
The goal of the papers you write in this class is to engage in a current issue, similar to the way authors and speakers throughout the term have. That is: your job is to become sufficiently familiar with the details of some multidisciplinary issue of moral concern right now, and to develop, argue for, and defend that position.
For instance: in my own scholarship, I have argued for the claim that there are no non-radical solutions to climate change left, and that of the radical solutions available, a focus on the human population is the most morally defensible. This argument required substantial space dedicated to the basic climate science, as well as current modeling projections. Only then, could I pull together some of the literature on solutions and form an argument.
This is an obvious format (although not the only possible one) for your paper to take: enunciate a thesis; teach me what I need to know in order to evaluate your argument; make the argument; and then defend it from objections. For the term paper, you may either take the feedback you receive from the midterm and revise/expand into the term paper, or you may choose to abandon the project, find a new topic, and try again.
Please help add any other bioethics approaches such as, four principles of bioethics, how to reduce stigma within pregnant women who are opioid dependent, make sure my citations and references are correct, the paper flows well, and my argument is strong enough to be compelling.
