Final project guidelines

20% of course credit

The final project can be a review essay or a research proposal

You can pose a question that your project seeks to answer (a ‘state of the art’ approach where your goal is not to argue a particular case but to build a picture of an area); alternatively, you can use your project to argue for or against some position relevant to the questions we have been investigating in the course, or you could investigate some area of application where findings from neurolinguistics have potential for enhancing understanding.

Some examples

1. One of our early readings was

Tremblay et al.’s (2014) essay, “Broca and Wernicke are dead”. You might want to challenge or defend some part of their thesis based on your reading during the term.

=> You could assemble readings that provide new evidence (since 2014) about the role(s) or lack thereof of Broca and Wernicke’s areas in language representation and processes; or

=> You could take on the idea that the emerging picture(s) of language processing challenge the ‘classical model’ in one or more ways and spell out the ways in which readings (post 2014) support that;

=>  You could ponder the question as to why Broca and Wernicke keep getting exhumed. Is there something about language processing or their method or ??? that draws neuroscientists inexorably back to them?

Speech production and speech comprehension

A number of authors we have/will read, state or presuppose that speech production and speech comprehension use the same pathways with, of course,  additional neural regions recruited depending on whether one is speaking or listening, reading or writing, and the task(s).

=> What other evidence have we seen that supports or undermines the idea that speech production and speech comprehension rely on the same networks?

One network/region for sentence processing?

Caplan et al. (2016) suggest that comprehension of particular complex syntactic structures is associated with different regions in different speakers and may also vary by task type. For example, syntactic structures such as passive voice or object relative clauses may be associated with different regions in different speakers and a speaker may have good comprehension for (say) passive voice in one task (e.g. picture matching) but poor comprehension in another such as object manipulation.

Caplan and colleagues conclude that the neural representations of complex syntax are an effect of ‘situated cognition’  which we could gloss as context specific (or Hebbian) learning.

=> What other evidence have we seen for ‘situated cognition’?

=> How would situated cognition alter expectations that production and comprehension processes are ‘the same’? => If you are interested in language acquisition or language learning, you might like to investigate the concept of situated cognition as a basis for language acquisition and/or learning and consider how this would differ from, for instance, conventional generative approaches that have presupposed ‘bootstrapping’ from a UG.

=> If you are more theoretically oriented, you might investigate whether ‘situated cognition’ and UG based learning are complementary or mutually exclusive.

Research project proposals

     => Llorens et al. (2014) present EEG evidence that shows speakers apparently using different networks to name pictures depending on whether they are familiarized with the data before performing the task or not. Write a research proposal for a replication EEG study and add one or two interesting components that will mean beyond replication (or not) you have some ‘new’ findings that extend our understanding of the results.

=> Other replication studies

=> Develop a research proposal based on an adapting  Fedorenko’s ‘language localizer tasks’ to EEG environment and explore time course implications for a specific contrasted

=> lots of others, talk to me about what you would like to do

The project should be equivalent to a 6-8 pages, double spaced, including references, tables etc. It should follow some style guide (APA, MLA…) in terms of references and conventions.

For papers: Fonts 12 points. Pages numbered. Your name and a title at the top of the page. For form’s sake, you can also write an abstract and put this at the beginning of your paper (if you are writing a paper).  That is, present it as though it is a draft article.
