Summary: For this assignment, you will look into the ways that contemporary poets use metaphor, simile, images and symbolism. This assignment should meet all the criteria on this checklist.

Specifics:

Part I. Do an investigation.

  1. Choose an emotion, an event, or a concept. (America, Love, Justice, Marriage, etc).
  2. Go to https://www.poetryfoundation.org/ (Links to an external site.) and use the search bar to search for the concept, emotion or event that you have chosen.
  3. Find two poems that deal with the event, concept, or abstract that you have chosen.
  4. Analyze the poems and identify the symbols, similes and metaphors that the poets use to symbolize the emotion, event, concept or abstract that you have chosen.

Part II. Write an Analysis

Introduction

    1. State the concept you have chosen (such as love, marriage, freedom, nature, etc).
    2. Introduce the poems you have chosen that deal with this concept.
    3. Give the titles and the authors of the poems.
    4. Explain what you want to show. What will your essay reveal? What have you discovered (specifically about the way that these poems create this concept) that you will share with the reader? This is your thesis statement: it captures the essence, the point, of your essay.
    5. Include the poems in full. See the example below:

Example thesis: “I will show that both of these poems, through various symbols and metaphors, show love to be something fleeting, ephemeral, and something that never lasts as quickly as we would want it to.”

Analysis

    1. Identify the main images, metaphors and similes of the poems you have chosen
    2. Explain what the important symbols that you have identified mean. Explain what kinds of associations exist around them? What are the most important associations with them?
    3. How do they help to create the meaning of the emotion, event, concept or abstract you have chosen? What meanings do they bring to the thing you have chosen? What characteristics do they give it?

Conclusion

  1. Summarize your findings. How did the two poets create the meaning of the emotion, event, concept or abstract? Are there any similarities? Any ideas or meanings that they have in common?
  2. Create your works cited as the last page.
  3. Submit your assignment!
