Text Engagement Exercise (10%):
Choose one of the assignments below. The write-up of your text engagement must correspond with a play and should be posted on the Discussion board before the Discussion Section on that particular work; in other words, you must complete the assignment by Thursday of the week in which the play you’re engaging with is discussed. Your contributions should then be offered for consideration to the group in your Discussion Section. All posts should also be hash-tagged with the title of the play, for clarity.
Assignments to choose from include:
- Tag the play
Tag a removable excerpt of the play on a space, building, or object. This place should help illuminate one aspect of the play/text in novel, jarring, and/or evocative ways. - Soundscape
Create a soundscape, or collection of sounds, that evokes one of the
thematic elements of the play. Sounds can be recorded from your daily life, or include brief selections of songs. The assignment is not to create a soundtrack, just a single audio clip that connects to the text in a meaningful way. Provide a one sentence explanation of what your soundscape is connecting to in the text. - Relevant Article/Media:
Find an article/media piece that connects to the themes or events of one of the plays listed above. Articles should be published either in print or online. Make sure to include source information and a one paragraph explanation of how the article connects to the text. - IMDB the play:
What current public figure would you cast in the play you have chosen? Why? What parallels do you see between the characters in the play and the figures you have chosen to cast to bring them to life? - Tableau:
For this you can work alone or in small groups (up to 3 people) to create a still image (using your bodies) that connects to important themes or plot points of one of the plays listed above. Make sure to tag all members of the group. Please include a one sentence explanation of the assignment.
