HistoryMakers Reflection 1 (African Art and Music)

(60 points)

AFA 201: Fall 2020

For this assignment, you need to first listen to a playlist of HistoryMakers from the HistoryMakers Digital Archive. The playlist should take approximately 1 hour to listen to. After listening to the interviews, answer the six questions below in complete paragraphs drawing in specific examples from the HistoryMaker clips.

To access the African Art and Music Playlist, copy and paste the link below into Google Chrome. Note: you may have to enter your EKU log-in information and password to access the playlist.

If the playlist above does not work (again, make sure you are using Google Chrome), you can make the playlist yourself by searching for the specific interviews. To access The HistoryMakers Digital Archives (HMDA), go to library.eku.edu > Databases > “H” > HistoryMakers (note: you may have to log in using your EKU username).

Once you are in the database, you can search for each of these clips in the search bar and add them to your playlist:

After listening to the clips above, answer the following questions in complete paragraphs drawing in specific examples from the HistoryMaker clips:

  1. According to J. Weldon Smith, “African art can only be fully understood in the context of its social function.” He would later refer to this by the term “art-ing.” Using at least three clips from the playlist, how do you see examples of this idea of “art-ing” and function in African art (or African-inspired art)?
  2. Per the interviews in the playlist, what is the connection between African art and music and the works of Black artists in North/South America and the Caribbean? Draw examples from at least three clips (different from those used in question one).
  3. Using three clips from the playlist, discuss the importance of African art and musical tradition to African Americans in the United States.
  4. Drawing at least two examples from the playlist, discuss any tensions that may exist between African art/artists and the African American community in the US.
  5. Per the interviews, what is the importance of textiles to both Africans and African Americans? (In addition to listening to their words, pay close attention to how the interviewees are dressed as well). How might textiles fit into the themes presented in J. Weldon Smith’s article?
  6. After reading this week’s readings, and listening to the HistoryMaker interviews, consider the influences of African art, music, and textiles in your own cultural experiences. In what ways have you seen examples of African art, music, and textile converge with American culture?
