Please select a criminological theory (rational choice theory) from any of the theories that you have learned about this
semester. You should select the theory you believe is the most valid explanation of criminal
behavior. Please answer the following questions in your paper. You should use the questions as
subheadings in your paper.
1. Discuss the history of the development of the theory.
2. Explain in detail why you think this theory does the best job of explaining the criminal
behavior you are examining (juvenile delinquency, sexual assault, drunk driving, and
etc.).
3. Has the theory been empirically supported? In other words, cite a minimum of five (5)
research studies that have tested the theory and be sure to report the findings of these
studies. The studies must be related to the criminal behavior you are attempting to
explain. The research studies must be from peer-reviewed sources (see the last page of
the syllabus for appropriate sources). NOTE: There is a column for non-peer-reviewed
sources. Non-peer-reviewed sources do NOT count toward the five studies.
4. What policies could be implemented if the theory were to be adopted by the criminal
justice system?
5. Your paper should have a title page, it should be typed, 5-7 pages in length (not including
the title page or references), 12-point font, and double-spaced (no extra spaces between
paragraphs).
6. Be sure to include a reference page citing all of your sources using the American
Psychological Association 6th edition. APA manuals are available through the library or
you may choose to purchase a copy. You may use Purdue’s OWL website
http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/ or APA Style at
http://www.apastyle.org/. I will provide you will an abbreviated APA Guide that will be
located under the Course Information Module/Folder.
7. This paper is a culmination of your learning for this semester. Be sure that the paper
reflects a breadth and depth of knowledge equal to a graduate level evaluation of the
theory. A grading rubric will be provided to the students which will detail the grades
students will receive based on the quality of the paper. The grading rubric will be located
under the Course Information Module.
8. Do NOT click and paste from the internet. I check all of the papers through the online
plagiarism tool provided in Blackboard. If you are caught plagiarizing a paper, I will
follow the University’s Academic Honesty Policy which includes punishments ranging
from receiving an “F” for the entire course to dismissal from the program. Unfortunately,
I have had students dismissed from other programs for plagiarism. Please do not risk it.
