Research Report Due Date:
Final Research Report: December 2, 2019 by 11:59pm. (worth 25% of final grade)

You can complete this assignment individually, in pairs or in group of three. Please send the names of your group
or advise that you will be working alone to the professor along with the topic selected by Monday, November
11, 2019 by 11:59pm via course message in Blackboard.
Research Report Description
Overview: The purpose of this assignment is to learn more about a specific and current HRM issue that is
affecting the workplace. You should approach this project by taking the role of HR Consultants. You have been
hired to help a company address your selected Human Resource Management issue in their organization. You are
required to do some academic research on the topic to understand the issue and current practice, and to recommend
how to deal with this issue using best practices and innovative methods.
You will deepen your understanding of the topic by conducting library research, using Humber’s extensive online
catalogue of academic journals. A minimum of 4 to 6 (2 articles per member if in a group of 2 or 3, or 4 articles in
you work individually) academic journal articles should be used – a good report will likely have more than the
minimum; 80% must be from 2009 or later (eg. not older than 10 years). You may also use your textbook as an
additional resource. (Note Wikipedia is not legitimate source; you may use industry journals/reports and newspaper
articles in addition to the academic journal articles, but not in place of them.)

• Your work should be well organized (e.g. introduction, appropriate subheadings, conclusions,
recommendations), with no spelling or grammar errors, flow smoothly, and be easy to read/follow.
• You should only submit your own work – synthesized and analyzed by YOU and written in your own words.
• All reports will be assessed using SafeAssign in Blackboard.
• Word Count = Minimum 1500 words to Maximum 2500 words
Research Report Guidelines:
Here are key guidelines/actions to follow so that your paper, its arguments and recommendations are welldeveloped:
• Identify issue you have chosen to address and provide a summary of it.
• Explain the relevance of your chosen issue to today’s business environment. Consider and discuss the
following:
o Scope: Does this issue affect a specific industry or all industries? Make sure you indicate the scope of
impact in your paper.
o Cause: What is causing the issue? Is it due to changes in employment laws, business cycles/trends,
economic conditions, demographic trends, labour market trends, technology changes, etc.?
o Impact: How will this issue affect a business’s ability to achieve its goals and objectives?
• Use the information you discovered in your research to and tie this clearly into the management of human
resources (the people or employees working in a company) and other relevant themes in this course.
o Again, you must use reliable and relevant scholarly articles – 80% must be no older than 10 years.
Your textbook and professional industry journals may be additional sources.
• Discuss and analyze the implications of this issue to managing human resources (the people or employees
working in an organization)
• What area of HRM could help address this issue?
o Outline the actions that the organization should take.
o Your plan needs to include descriptions of the Human Resource policies, practices and processes that
you would propose to address your chosen issue/trend within a company/organization.
o Include an assessment of the impacts your recommendations would have on employees.
• Provide specific recommendations for the implementation and management of your HR plan.
o Be sure to include your rationale and specific timelines.

References should be appropriately cited and follow the APA format.

• We want to recognize the contributions and successes of our employees in new, innovative ways (employee
recognition)
• Our employees only seem to stay with us for a few years and our turnover is having a negative impact on
our business (talent retention)
• Our workforce is getting older and we are not sure what we should be doing about it. (managing an aging
workforce)
• We want our employees to be more engaged and excited by the work our company does. (Increasing
employee engagement).
• We find that our clients are very diverse. We want our employees to reflect that diversity. (Increasing
diversity in your workforce)
• We want to improve the way we hire our staff so that we pick great people who stay with our company
