Applying the Generalist Model Assignment- 150 points

ENGAGING, ASSESSING, INTERVENING AND EVALUATING A CASE

Purpose: To practice applying the generalist model framework to a child welfare or gerontology case

Course Outcomes and Core Competencies:

1. Describe the knowledge, values, skills and competencies necessary for beginning-level generalist practice (Core Competency 1,2,6,7,8,9)

4. Identify the role of the social worker and how service delivery differs based on diverse client populations (Core Competency 1,2,6,7,8,9)

6. Develop and apply critical thinking, written and oral communication skills within the context of the Social Work profession (Core Competency 1,2,6,7,8,9)

Please pick ONE of the cases and respond as a generalist social worker to the questions on the worksheet. You will submit the worksheet on Blackboard.

Case Example 1- Child Welfare- You have been assigned to the following case since the regular social worker has gone on sick leave. When you get the case, you need to think about using a person-in-environment framework and how to begin. How will you use a generalist approach that includes: engagement, assessment, intervention and evaluation? Use your critical thinking skills to consider all aspects of the case. Try to catch yourself and acknowledge if you have any bias or stereotypical thinking about the case.

Tony is a 13-year old boy who is currently living in foster care with a relative. Four months ago, he was removed from the care of his father after the school nurse called Children and Youth to report Tony came to school with bruises on his arms and face. Tony was placed with his maternal aunt and uncle. They live in a rural community about one hour from his home. According to case files from Children and Youth, Tony has lived with his father since his mother died 2 years ago. His father has struggled with alcohol abuse since his wife’s death, and he becomes angry when drunk.

The service plan for the family requires Tony’s father attend weekly counseling at the local family service agency, to attend alcohol treatment meetings weekly, and to have weekly visits with Tony that are supervised by his aunt and uncle. Unfortunately, since there is conflict with the foster family (Tony’s maternal aunt and uncle), the visits have been limited. Tony is having difficulty adjusting to his new school as he is used to being in a more urban school district. The school social worker will be meeting with him. All this information will be presented to the juvenile court at his 6-month review.

Case Example 2- Gerontology- You have been assigned to the following case since the regular social worker has gone on sick leave.

The Area Agency on Aging you work for assigned you to take over the case concerning Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez. Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez is an 86-year old woman who has been living alone for the past 15 years since her husband passed away. She has done well on her own but her daughter is starting to get concerned about her memory. She has missed paying a couple of bills, missed a doctor appointment and sometimes she seems confused. Her daughter is concerned since she lives 2 hours away. Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez is not interested in leaving her home that she has lived in for the past 42 years. She repeatedly tells her daughter she is just fine and she should not worry. She asked to have a social worker meet with her mother to help her to consider moving into an Assisted Living facility so she would have help. You set up a time to meet with Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez in her home.

Upon meeting Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez, you sit down and talk with her to start getting to know her. You look around the house and notice the lighting is not great, it does not seem like it has been cleaned in a while and you notice dirty dishes in the sink. Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez tells you she is very happy and content as this is her home. She insists that she is fine and doesn’t need any help with daily living. She is still able to manage to wash, get dressed and go shopping occasionally. Usually her neighbor gets her food when she shops. Mrs. Brown-Gonzalez does not like to drive much anymore. She enjoys her days watching TV… shows like Jerry Springer, Dr. Phil, Maury, etc. keep her entertained. She prefers not to watch the news since it is depressing. She also likes to give to charities and is always willing to give when some nice person calls on the phone to ask for a gift for their charity. She is fine giving her credit card information to the “nice people” who ask for donations. She thinks you are a “nice girl” and thanks you for coming but she is not interested to move anywhere. She is adamant about staying in her home. She asks you to please tell her daughter she is just fine and is not interested in getting any help. Her friends tell her that “those people” that help you in your home steal from you. She wants no part of this.
